The emergency brake pedal on my 73 does not work. It is missing the release handle and probably other parts.

Would a emergency brake pedal from any other year CJ or YJ work on the intermediate?

    Thanks

The original part wasn't a very durable design. We replaced a lot of these on warranty in the day. They tended to bend if the owner stomped on them at an angle instead of straight-on. This would bend the pedal frame and the pawl would then be too far from the teeth and the brake would not stay applied. The release cable also wears out and breaks.

The release cable was available a few years ago - Jeep 5351421. I searched but did not find an easy source today, though I found lots of references to the part. Crown made a replacement - you could call the Crown warehouse in Massachusetts and ask if they can find one for you. To fix the pedal frame, you might be able to remove the unit from the body and bend it back so that it works again.

Failing that, I would try the 5355477 Jeep part for 1976-on CJ before I tried to find a replacement for the original pedal. This unit was also used on the YJs through 1995, apparently. I believe this unit has a more rigid frame, and uses a permanently affixed release rod rather than the troublesome cable. I don't know of anyone who has done this - but the parts look similar enough that you should be able to make the newer part work.

I expect this WILL NOT just bolt in. Possible, but unlikely. You will almost certainly need to modify the mounting or cable routing, or both.

If you make some mods so the later-style pedal will work, please post up here and show us what you did. The intermediate Jeeps have rather poor parts support, and any work-arounds for unavailable parts will be very welcome.

A new pedal assembly is quite expensive - I would go to the wrecking yard and look for one to pick from a YJ. You may also need the front cable. If you can find an example on the street or in the yards, take some pics and make some measurements before you buy the part.

Interesting. I replaced the one on my '88 YJ last summer - because the frame cracked. Maybe the slightly later units are stronger. But it lasted 80K miles, and was cheap and available to replace.

Thanks for all the comments. I am going to try to get a 76-up pedal and make it work.

Does anyone has a photo of the body mounts for the 76-up. Want to see what I would need to change.

Just curious...did you ever get the 76-up emergency brake assembly to work on your pre-76?

Yes, sorry. I did get it to work on my 73 CJ5. The rear (firewall side) bolted right up but the front (dash side) required some minor cutting, bending and welding but nothing hard. I used the existing holes in the tub to mount it but I am not sure if they are original. I also had to cut the pedal a few inches to prevent it from hitting the floor. I don't remember how much I cut but just enough for the pedal to be level with the brake pedal. Original cable worked just fine. Here are some photos I just took.
