early cj5 tub on 76 and later frame

    I realize the tub is about the same save for the mounting. Has anyone here done this swap?
    I am using my 73 front end so that will all line up the same.

    I am wondering what is involved in the mounting of the tub to the later frame.

    Nope, just probably the only one to post it in the builds forum rather than the tech forum. This forum is generally the place where people showcase their builds with photos of progress rather than the forum where people post technical questions.

    Have not done it, but I know that the floors and mounts are different between the pre-76 and post-75 tubs.

    Most people here would be interested in moving a later tub to the early frame, not vice-versa. The later tubs are more plentiful, and there are a lot of early Jeeps with rusty tubs. So, it's kinda backwards from a practical perspective. If you want the later frame, just buy a later Jeep and part out the early tub and (broken?) frame. Plenty of early frames out there without a tub (or with a falling-apart tub).

    I guarantee you can do it by cutting out all the early tub floors and replacing them with later floors. Beyond that, both the vertical and horizontal locations of the mounts will be different.

    I have the 73 tub and later frame already that's why I see this as a option.

    Back to the OP question. It will fit, you will have to move some body mounts. Get the tub in place on the frame with blocking and cribbing then measure for your new body mount outriggers.

    Yeah, I see the appeal ...

    but it may not work out so well. It depends on what you want. Generally you will come out way ahead (in money and time) by starting with a complete vehicle. You'll also do better by spending more money initially on a better vehicle, than by trying to rescue a car that's rusty, or incomplete.

    It all depends on what you want. If you want to build a custom vehicle from the ground up, then you can use whatever pieces you want. If you want something you can drive and enjoy right away, and you want to keep the cost down, my advice is to start with a complete vehicle.

    I just dont really see much of a difference to be encountered than the mounting and the tank.

    Heck I am even thinking of using one of my 7 frames! The Rear is already Comp cut from when I stretched my ecj5 frame. I'd have a place for my cooler!!


    Actually I really have been leaning towards that idea. I have always wanted to stretch the tub into a cj5.5!

    Looks like I will be using the later cj7 frame and stretching the tub!

    Some say to just get a 7 but I really like the ecj5-6 body style.

    Now... do I want to stretch the frame exactly the same length as a intermediate cj6 or leave It the cj7 length?

    72-75 Cj6's have a 106" WB correct?

    101" early, 104" intermediate, I recall. 81/84" CJ-5 plus 20 inches. CJ-7 should be 94", a CJ-5 plus 10 inches. Use the front clip from an intermediate or later and stretch the body 10".

    Bam Update! I'm Starting on this. I sold of few of my frames and purchased a near mint 80 some odd cj7 Frame. I have had it sand blasted and My wife and Nephew hand primed and painted the frame. The frame came with a 1 year old Super lift soft ride lift and hardware. I also procured a set of wide track axles from a late 80s cj7 that have been built with gears and lunchbox lockers with 1 piece rear axles. I lucked into those as a fellow jeeper was in some legal trouble and needed to get parts out of his parents garage and had less than a week to get it all out. I paid less than $125 for those.

    So whats the current status of the Jeep? Right now my 1973 cj5 is sitting on 1 tons and new 35's. I had built a extended frame for this jeep and boxed it in and had soa's. I wheeled it for a few years and decided I liked it better when I had 4" of lift and 35's. The jeep has been in my family since new and I cannot get rid of it. I want to be able to drive it to the trails and make it way more road worthy. I may be able to sell the 1 tons for some Cash and help with the build. The rear of the tub has been hacked to accommodate the longer frame I have under it now. I sold my 40" swampers and have a new set of 35" Cooper MT's with steel wheels already.

    The rear of the Jeep will just have to work with the 10" or whatever it is of overhang off the rear for now until I can modify the rear of the tub to fit the cj7 frame.. I'll park the front clip in the stock spot that the 72-86 jeep share. I'll add and position floor mounts where they need to be.

    I will also be using the half cab Hardtop I have had for 20 years on this jeep. I have a cut down rear roll bar that was on the jeep when bought the Halfcab I will be using that. Pretty excited to be getting back on this. Should be pretty straight forward since the new frame will be rolling.

    I know it deviates from the norm for a Early cj5 build but I am keeping this jeep and this is what i need to do to get her back on the road.
    I will start a Build thread when I can with some updated pics.
