Well since this jeep has been assembled back in June it's turned close to 9000 miles since we drove cross country. It has been my daily driver taking me to and from my college probably a half dozen times this fall (400 mi round trips each time). I'm trying to buy back my overdrive from herm (got it repaired) so if you can't already guess where this is going, the hedmans to cherry bombs aren't flattering for the ears at 60mph..

The current exhaust at that rpm range is pretty intolerable and I’ve wanted to run duel pipes through the limited space and out the back for some time now. So with some Christmas money I got the pipes together and started chopping it up.

this is where I’m at after the first few hours of work, I’ve got two sets of headers for my motor, the ones I was using w. the cherry bombs were hedmans that I got off this site actually, they used a bulb style collector and I welded the matching collector to the cherry bombs, for this exhaust setup I tracked down the gasket style flush up collectors.

The headers on top-left (not rusty) feature the flush up style collectors w. gaskets. The ones on the bottom-right are the hedmans I was using up until this project.

close-up of the collectors I was trying to describe (bulb style hedmans on top, no name heders w. the flush style on bottom).

Basically this is the way to go if you want to build a modular exhaust that you can remove and install for easier welding or painting. I will still break up the exhaust prior to the crossover but using those horrible pipe clamps that will not come off (if properly installed).

Just some supplies, plenty of straight pipe. And a hack saw.

Here's the crossover that should live right above the pumpkin, the Hobart wasn't cooperating today and threw some pitty welds, but it's burned through pretty well.

I started on the pass. Side with the collector installed, test fitted, and mocked up the chopped straight pipe to match then bend and wrap around the frame. (About 1 inch still needs chopped from the straight pipe to clear the spring hanger)

Some shots from various angles, its a little Frankenstein right now, but when it's fully welded, smoothed and painted it will turn out alright. I wish there was a better way to route this in case I do land it on a log or rock. But then again it is modular, if I’m running a hairy trail I’ll just go straight headers.

The crossover where it should sit once the rest of the pipes gets routed.

Drivers side pipe pointing toward the crossover, that'll have to wait till tomorrow or the day after when inclement weather/ family gift exchanges aren't stopping me haha.

    Project on pause...

are you putinag any type of silencer out the back or just straight pipe? From what i gather if your running anything other than a hardtop you should route the pipes to the side or youll get fumagated :)

    ??

i'm not sure what you're asking, but it's going to be straight pipe out the back. i don't think it's going to be an issue with fumes since it dumped out right next to the drivers/pass side before. when i finish this two pipes will just go out the back like a reg. setup.

also i'm sure i'm not the first to comment on a tigertops "ability" to venelate...even if you don't want it to haha. i know this all too well since i don't have a heater and it's definetly cold in PA.

It sure looks close to the pumpkin I'm sure you have verified clearance when the suspension compressed. Also how hard do you wheel the jeep? crossing under the frame in front of the rear springs is not the best place.

    Nice looking jeep!

all i know is that it can't be louder than headers straight to cherry bombs... at 60 mph on a 4+ hour drive i can't even hear the music in my headphones.

it might graze the exhaust. it'll have enough adjustment to flush it up close to the frame. i'll be running tailpipes they are more like the finial part of this though, the tough part is routing the exhaust around the frame.

I would install some mufflers. You can get some cheap ones at your flaps. Put them right after the headers. Also I know I have seen pics where someone ran the pipe along the frame rail between the tire and frame and it worked out well. It was someone from this site I cant remember who. Without mufflers it will be way to loud.

When I ran the exhaust toi the rear on my CJ5 the Bestop would pull the fumes in the rear. With the steel hardtop it doesn't.

i'm right with you all on not destroying eardrums. i'm not out to prove that i'm tough by running straight pipes, but the cherry bombs are flow through you can easily see through one end, tack on another 4 foot or so of pipe along with the crossover...

my money is on a lower decible level. especially since it's dumping further out behind the driver rather than right next to the door. we'll know soon enough when i finish this up tomorrow. (weather pending) i do see the point with exhaust fumes, makes me wonder, but either way it will have tail pipes all the way to the bumper.

thanks for the comments, it's always good to hear second opinions

You're doing fine work, don't get me wrong. And you are right about getting the noise out from under (beside) you.
I'm curious as to how it's going to sound. It's gonna be loud.;)

on my 225 i have the original 2 into 1 crossover pipe running single exhaust to the back in a nice straight run with a glass pack . Its definaltly not too loud. Its downright qiuet at idle and has a nice rumble when reved up. I dont think itll be too loud

yeah i love the sound it makes just for driving around town. hell when i come home from school i ditch the cherrybombs all together just to make noise, but the rpm's are so high at 50-60 it is def. loud.

worse case scenario if the sound isn't really diminished by this new setup i found little "mini" flowmasters on ebay awhile back (they are knockoffs, but the size and price is right) they can sit just aft of the crossover and before the bumper. right now this will just be my bandaid until i can get my overdrive back and kill off the high rev's.
