My ‘67 CJ5 has 10” drums all around, but my research has led to a desire to replace the front drums with disc brakes.

To my wife’s chagrin I am starting from a bare frame, giving me the opportunity to do the build right. Knowing that I want to go to disc, I also know that I need to replace the single master cylinder with a dual, and also add in a proportioning valve.

I am open to suggestions from any and all. The last thing I want to do is repeat someone else’s mistakes (thank you ahead of time for the learning curve).

question : when we change drums by discs do we also can put an abs system ? Or more sophisticated if possible.
I don't want to change my brake system because I don't drive fast or at risk to drive a cj5 is like skiing to game is stay on the track and avoid contacts:cool:
the important is that folowers can avoid your car, it is them who need new technology to avoid your slow antic machine.
    (y):cool::cool:
More complex is when you turn right or left, you slow down and prepare to turn BUT a fast people decides that your snail machine will take some miniutes to lturn and he passes you when you start turning the wheels.

Of course your nice turn signal is considered as some fancy trick so, if you can read this, stay in your area where you are never obliged to turn.:flag::lol:

Alan - I have not heard of any early Jeeps being upgraded with ABS. There are a few articles on the internet about ABS upgrades for hot rods. I would think, for a Jeep, you may as well install a complete traction control system that also works off the pavement. These systems apply the brakes to the wheel with the least traction, forcing the other wheels to work harder. The modern Jeeps have something like this, as well your Vitara may. With traction control, you should not need locking differentials.

To JustEmptyEveryPocket, you might consider eliminating the 10" brakes entirely, and go to 11" Bendix drums for the rear, with disks for the front. Parts for the 10" (Wagner IIRC) brakes are scarce and expensive, and the 11" brakes are much more common (millions of Ford light trucks came with them). Service parts for the 11" brakes are easy to source and inexpensive. They are a bolt-on upgrade if you choose the right parts donor.

    Thanks for the advice, Tim.
Am definitely going to do the front conversion, possible the rears as time/$$ dictate.
Wife now understands what J.E.E.P stands for.

Alan, assuming that Jeeps are going to be used off road, ABS would be a mistake. ABS brake systems area nightmare on dirt.

Why, because you lose all braking?

Well, thanks Tim. But I won't modify my Jeep, the question about ABS is because it is very useful to stop on roads.
Of course on bad tracks ABs is not useful.
Between us, my Audi Quattro works better on slippy ground than my CJ5 which likes to dig holes!
The Quattro is perfect but not the same age.
And not very nice for rock crawling!

Today I bought a Suzuki Vitara S Allgripp automatic transmission, for my wife use. We tested it, it is a car.
There is a lot of electronic systems but I prefer to drive my CJ5, it is more fun.
Anyway, we all have to move from one place to an other.
About electric cars, the Suzuki salesman told us that there is a lack of lithium batteries for cars.

I am not sure that it is the future for automobile, mines are not able to produce more.
