Well some of you may doubt I actually own a Jeep, however I do. Worth and Sparky have both ridden in it. I'm sure they'll be happy to confirm, um....................

Anyway, this weekend I was putting the Halloween boxes back into the overhead storage in the garage, so I pushed Betsy the hanger queen into the driveway. After putting up the boxes, I had a few minutes so I reconnected the battery and started the Jeep up. Since it's been at least a month since I started her, it took a few trys to get gas to the carb, in between turns I heard a gurgling sound and started to smell gas. Seems like at least a couple of quarts had left the fuel system courtesy of the fuel pressure regulator. 10 mins later after hunting up a new length of fuel hose and couple of new hose clamps all is well - but it could have been ugly.

If you have one of these dial type (mine was a Spectre) I'd recommend removing it. I was fortunate, nothing caught fire, but it could have been ugly.

I agree Joel, I've had them start leaking as well. After that I started using the Holley style adjustables exclusively. More money but cheaper than a vehicle burning to the ground.

Not just fuel regulators, but an awful lot of material on the market today is essentially counterfeit crap. And it certainly does raise safety issues.

Recently I had a new section of rubber gas line (factory marked as "fuel line") completely disintegrate in less than a year, dumping several gallons of gas on a wooden barn floor.

How can we be sure of buying quality and being safe?

    Don't buy chinese!!!!!!!

Most of the time it costs more, sometimes a lot more, but I will not buy chinese car parts if there is any alternative (and sometimes there isn't, IE, Warn series wound winch motors). On hose, Gates, Parker, Aeroquip (Eaton) etc will get you good stuff.

I also had a recent problem with a Spectre fuel pressure regulator. Been doing some carb upgrades and tuning recently and decided to install a pressure regulator. Once installed it behaved erratically. Discovered this while having problems adjusting the floats (Holley 4bbl). I have an electric fuel pump and had turned the key to the on position without starting it to check the fuel pressure gauge on the dash. Pressure wasn't coming up but I heard a gurgling sound. Looked past the opened hood to see a geyser of gas coming out bowl vents. Immediately shut it off. The carb was full of gas and slowly draining past the throttle plates into the intake. Thinking hydro-lock I pulled all the spark plugs and cranked for a good 30 seconds. It shot a cloud of gas out one of the plugs holes about 15 feet.

I removed the Spectre POS, returned it and installed a Holley pressure regulator that has worked just fine.

Oh..... BTW, Joel does have a jeep. I've seen it. Out in the desert of all places!

There's bad stories about those regulators all over the 'net. I had two in a row that were junk last summer. One didn't flow, the other leaked.

I have one of those installed now in an attempt to keep the pressure for my Solex to 1.5 lbs of pressure. Can someone recommend a specific product? I've done some searching for universal fuel pressure regulators but I'm having a hard time finding one that will do pressure that low.

Stout, I'm using a Holley fuel pressure regulator. Spec'd for 1-4 PSI. Summit Racing has them.
