    So...

Assembling my engine that is now back from the machine shop... The timing cover was tanked and machined. I go to test fit and there is a slight wobble, almost as if the timing cover is warped slightly. I order a new one from Summit Racing, same sever so slight wobble is there...

    Two questions..
    - Has anyone experienced this?
    - Will the gasket combined with tightening of the bolts take up the slack space?

    Thanks..

Doesn't seem to be they both go in to the hole, then there is still a slight wobble from the upper left to the lower right...

Put a straight edge across it.....and check it in several locations...........if it's good look at the block

    Good call..

this is seriously frustrating... Especially since the block has just been rebuilt, I don't know how the block would be warped tho, that is some thick steel.

I doubt it's the block.............but those old aluminum timing covers can get electrolysis started in areas that build corrosion on the surface of the parts............again a straight edge works , but also a nice long flat file......placed across the sealing surface and just grazing from side to side while keeping the cutting to a minimum will start to show you what's high or low...........don't get carried away!

Ok I will give that a go when I get home... hopefully that with the gasket and bolts will be enough...

As thin as a timing cover is, when you bolt it up it should pull back. . I would put a some sealer as well as the gasket when installing it. Check where the bolt holds the distributor in, the after market one I got, had to get a different hold down.

That is what I was thinking...

My older timing cover does seem to fit nearly flush however, so I may just use that. It was dipped and had new helicoils installed, the machine shop dude just thought it was a little more wore than my other cover...

Can't see from here how much it's off................but , on that cast aluminum cover vs a sheet metal cover that will flex some ...........you don't really want to crank the bolts down on the aluminum one to take up any gaps....as it may very well crack in that area now or later.....................A straight edge and a long flat file will tell you where the problem is.

Its really worth it to get the ta cover and oil pump assembly with adjustable relief. Yes a little pricey but if you spent the money on a rebuild its cheap insurance. The factory housings are wear prone and aftermarket is always suspect on tolerances. Just my 2¢

I've seen a stock timing cover that was warped. It wouldn't lay flat against the block, or a piece of plate glass. It had at least 1/16" gap under a corner. We re-used it with no issues, as the bolts easily pulled it back into place.
The cover may have been warped due to a previous owner prying on it to get it loose when there was still a bolt buried in gunk that they didn't see. There were obvious pry marks.

You only need their cover $190, stock oil pump $30, adjustable relief $20.

Yep no problem with a .060 gap........that's about a gasket thickness.
