Now comes the hard part for me. I really have no auto mechanical experience so I'll rely heavily on ya'll for a while now. My build has gone well so far. The frame is straight and solid, swapped front dana 30, I have new brake lines all plumbed, YJ springs and tierod flip.

First question is about the carb. The engine has been sitting for 10 years so I'm expecting the worse. Is this a good carb? stock? Is it easy to rebuild? parts available? How much to just replace it?

Which line on the fuel pump goes to the tank? Carb?

Beyond the filter there is a valve. Is that for coolant? Is that where a heater hose would go?

I'm missing all the gas pedal linkage. What is the easiest way to put a cable on this Jeep? Is cable the way to go?

    Three ?!?!
I only saw 2 but didn't look that close. I guess one is from tank, one is out to carb and one is the return??

For the 3/8 fine thread bolts and nuts that hold on exhaust - Anything special? Grade? Stainless? Use anti seize?

    Carb:
The stock 2G has a good following here and many folks like it. I've rebuilt 1 of them. No more difficult than any other carb as far as I know. Not that I've done a bunch of them or anything.

Replacing it opens up several options. There are other 2G carbs that are just a tad bigger (bigger throttle plates/bore I think) that came from the factory on other period GM vehicles. Search GM 2 jet.

Or you can use an adapter plate and: install a Motorcraft 2100 2bbl. Lots of folks like them and say they perform very well off road. Or maybe a Holley 2 bbl.

Or you can buy an aluminum 4 bbl intake and small 4 bbl carb and toss that on there.

Fuel pump: There were 2 different ones AFAIK. a 2 port and 3 port. The 2 port came on earlier V6s I believe. The 3 port came later and may be the only replacement available any more. As mentioned, 1 from tank, 1 to carb and 1 returns to tank. Could or should be marked on the pump but maybe not.

I've seen the return line port plugged on some of the 3 port types as it appears to be in your picture.

That valve: Got me. Never saw that before. Looks like a drain of some type. Maybe to drain coolant from the block?

Header bolts: They do tend to work loose from heat cycling. There are special bolts you can buy and/or locking washers for just this application. Or you just keep checking them periodically. Check Summit or someplace like that for the special bolts.

That valve is where your oil pressure sending line goes. That valve was probably for an install/ startup deal. Before you get carried away with the headers, figure out your steering. Lots of threads on carbs out there. I usually do a HEI distributor and aluminum intake with a Holley 390cfm carb.

Headers look to be AA outside the rails setup? If so, you won't have issues if you go Saginaw.

I prefer the HEI, 4BBL setup as well. For carbs, either the 390 or ran a TA470 with good success - could never get an Edelbrock 500 to work right and lots of folks really like the smaller Rochester QJets. I have since moved to EFI on my 225s that I really like.

Again about the header bolts. The studs on the top are 3/8 fine thread. The bottom has hole for bolts but they are 3/8 normal corse threads. Is this normal? Or maybe the bottom row needs studs installed?

The top studs are most likely course inner and fine outer. The holes in the block all started out 3/8" course thread. Many times studs are installed to make gasket installation easier.

This is true, but the two sizes of 2G carbs are not interchangeable. The bolt pattern and air cleaner size are different.
The carb pictured above doesn't appear to be a 225 carb, the throttle arm is wrong, and to my knowledge the Dauntless never used a divorced type auto choke like that carb is set up for.

Is this the correct carb? $200 isn't bad I think.

Supposedly header flange bolts are notorious for loosening. Safety wire is one fix, or special washers that bend over to hold the bolt head. My preference is for iron manifolds. Headers are expensive, hot, noisy, leaky, and fragile - other than that, they are great. Strictly race car tech in my book. I would put copper anti-seize on the threads into the cylinder head.

What Tim just said should be in a sticky about headers! They definitely have a place, just not on most Jeeps.

I agree, BUT is there an easy way to do the power steering conversion with iron manifolds? I understand there is a rear dump manifold for the driver side but more or less unattainable.

I have power steering with iron manifolds. But I did get lucky to find a rear dump driver side. I really disliked my headers outside the frame rails, too susceptible to damage from rocks. I have that same fuel pump, I'll take some pics today of which port goes where.

Maybe my pump is different than yours. Here's mine.

The outlets on bottom are two different sizes, the small one is the return to the tank. On mine it's the one closest to the camera. The larger one is from the tank and the horizontal one on the back goes up to carb. Hope that helps, probably doesn't.
