My 225 clatters like crazy at idle...but it doesn't really sound like lifters to me. It seems to quiet down with some rpms. Thoughts?

Whats you oil pressure at idle? Has the timing chain been replaced in the somewhat recent past?

Probably timing chain. When the get loose, they slap against the guides and make it sound like a diesel at idle. Goes away when you rev it up.

Mine was that way when I got it and it was driving me nuts. Here's what the timing chain looked like:

Swapped out the chain and guides and it purrs like a kitten now.

.....well, except for the exhaust leak at the passenger side flange.

I'm hoping this is it...it really sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine but it's hard to tell.

When they’re really worn, they can start to slap against the cover at idle, and that’s really loud. You’ll be able to see a wear mark if that was happening.

I’m having Mighty Mouse flashbacks. I thought that thing was going to self destruct in the Dakotas.

A trick my dad taught me was to grab a piece of wood dowel. Hold it on parts of the engine you want to listen in on, then put your ear near and almost against the other end. You can hear valves clicking, etc. depending on location. I bet you can tell if it’s the chain as long as you can safely get it to that area and avoid the fan, pulleys, and belts.
