OK, I know this seems silly but I am trying to figure out if this is how it was set up from the factory. The rod that holds the air cleaner on is tilting forward (noticeably). When it is set up like this, the top of the air cleaner won't fit on properly. It seems the solution is just to bend the rod a little so the air cleaner fits. I am just wondering if this is what they did at the or if I am missing something here...

Yes...But remove it to bend it. It was probably bent by someone forcing off the air cleaner at an angle.

Thanks for moving to the proper forum. Definitely good advice to remove it to bend it into a better position. But just to clarify - the rod in this picture is not bent. This is how it is coming out of the carburetor. The air horn on the carburetor (that is, the 2G casting) angles it back this way. Same on both of my 1970 CJs.

I'd say it's factory if all 3 are the same.

    Is your air horn cracked?

Thanks. Interesting. It looks like your carburetor does not lean it forward quite as much. hard to tell. Is that a stock 1971 2G?

I know Rochester made marine versions and what I posted above is a marine carb. ????

That one looks to be angled back about the same as mine. Not sure about the marine application - it's possible I guess. The 2G was used on many GM products; maybe the GM cars incline the engine more than a Dauntless. Maybe it's the large spacer for the Dauntless air cleaner that magnifies the impact of the slant.

If you assemble the lid to the main housing and look through the throat hole, is the hole in the lid offset? Do you have a picture of the air cleaner assembly you are using?

Yes, the hole is offset unless the rod is bent. It is the stock air cleaner.

Yep - I will definitely be removing it and bending it into a better position.

It has the anti-backfire valve from the factory but no other smog equipment.
