From what i've searched on the forums is that the serial number on a 71' CJ-5 can be found on the front right frame rail top side. Does anyone know the approximate location of the serial numbers from the firewall? The problem I'm having is that I misplaced my data plates and am trying to recover the numbers. I got the frame as is and started the rebuild process from there. The state inspector had previously told me that as long as I produce all receipts for parts put on the vehicle including the motor, transmission and that the CJ-5 is safe and road worthy that he'll issue me a custom VIN number. Now he has changed his mind and said I need a serial number to show him. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as usual.

    Thanks.

My 69 has a metal plate on the firewall on the drivers side in the engine compartment.

i found my data plates, but now i think that i might not have a CJ5. the data plate serial number is : CJV-35 10037. when i bought the frame it the previouse owner told me it was a CJ5. i've tried to do a little bit of research and from what i've found is that the CJV35 was a custom order vehicle, a cross between the M38 and CJ-3. the s/n matches the frame.
