Hello I have a question regarding transfer cases, I was given recently a running worn down 1967 Ford F100 4x4 4spd 300ci pickup and was wondering if I could place the Dana 21 transfer case in my 1954 M38A1 and what the difference is between the Dana 18,20 and 21 of course I'm curious due to the fact of what to do with the F100 if it's better to keep or part out for my jeep thanks.

Is the Ford passenger drop or driver drop? Offset is wrong for the 20 or 21 too - they are both centered. M38A1 driveshaft is too short to accommodate a centered output.

Why wouldn't you fix the F100 and drive it or sell it? Nothing there for your M38A1.

If you were closer I'd look at it...recently bought a 71 ford in great shape and have this project idea to make into a 4x4.....I must be losing my mind like I need another project......:banghead:

    This.
As posted above, it's a drivers side drop single speed transfer case...totally different from any Jeep case. They were used in early F100 4x4's behind the T18 & NP435. I've never seen one with an automatic transmission but they probably exist.
Fun story-I broke one of those clear in two plowing snow one day....I've cracked and broken gearboxes before but this is the only one that was literally in two pieces! The lower half was dangling off the front driveshaft! I was able to drive it home, though ;)

Jeep used the 21 behind the Borg-Warner automatic in the very earliest 230 Wagoneers, '62-65. Not a great idea - Jeep misjudged their market IMO. As mentioned, it's single-speed, and the Wagoneers can go a lot more Jeep-like places with a low range.

I believe the Dana 21 in Ford trucks was a divorced unit. As already said, nothing there for an m38a1.

I had a 71 high boy(390, np435, 3/4ton). Great rigs- you ought to get that one running
