I am all most done with my dana 30 rebuild/install to replace my dana 27.

I have run into a problem trying to get the axel out far enough to install the snap ring on the end of the axel before I install the lockout hub cap.

I have searched and I don’t think it is critical to have the snap ring installed?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

I believe it's important, it keeps the axle U-joint in line with the ball joint pivot angle. Is the end of the stub axle drilled and tapped?

My axle shaft does have some in and out movement. Push/ pry the shaft out a bit from Axle U-joint Area.

About half the Jeeps that came into the dealership were missing the axle end snap ring, I'd guess. Seems it does not matter much. However, it's supposed to be there, and easy to install if you pull out on the axle shaft. There is a threaded hole in the axle end that you can thread a bolt into and pull out to reveal the snap ring groove.

Thank yo for the quick responses. I think I know what the problem is.

My knuckle kit (roller bearings, seal, etc) came with a plastic shim the I though went between the slinger/bronze bushing and the spindle (no spacer was there when I tore it down). If I remove the spacer, the axle will have enough movement to expose the snap ring groove.

I debated installing the nylon/plastic spacer, but thought it had to be in the kit for a reason (I am assuming its there incase the slinger is missing).

I will let you guys know what happens after I pull it apart tonight.

    Thanks

Put a screw driver here. This will help get the snap ring on the end of the axle.

I took the extra spacer (???) out tonight and put everything back together. The axle moved enough for me to install the snap ring on both ends. All is good :)

    Thanks
