I am wondering if I can move a new gear set that is currently in a wide track Dana 30 from a later-model CJ over to a narrow track Dana 30 with 3.54. Does anyone know if this gear set is interchangeable between these two axles? Thanks!

The part that the ring gear bolts on to (also housing the spider gears) come in different depths as to setback where the gear bolts on. These are referred to "series" cases. Generally, we are concerned with 3 Series and 4 Series. The 4 Series include 3.73, 4.10, 4.88, etc and "higher"number gears. Gears with 3.54, 3.31, etc, and "lower" numbers use the 3 Series case. These quoted breaks from 3 to 4 Series are unique to the D30.
A D44 uses different breaks, where a 3.73 fits a 3 Series and lower numbers.
You can swap gears from one axle housing to another, as in narrow track to wide track, as long as the case is correct for the ratio.
It all depends on what gears are in your wide track D30.

Donny, thanks for the great information! Can I just move the carrier and gears from the wide track to the narrow track?

Yes, but you will have to set up (shim) all the bearings and gears for the other housing. It would be a miracle if everything dropped in with the same backlash.

The big one would be the pinion depth. If you have the gears out or cover off at least you may be able to see some kind of + - number on the end of the pinion. Usually its low like 1, 2, or 0. Thats the offset from where it is the "perfect" setup. If the 2 pinions are the same offset you should be good to use the same depth shim on the pinion. If they are different it a matter of + or - a shim thickness to get the right pinion depth. Then its just a matter of shimming the ring gear and carrier for backlash and preload. Its fairly easy if youve done a few, but if not can be confusing.
