Dana 25 Play

Can someone enlighten me on these numbers on my front axle? Thanks! I will be using this exclusively on the road. City runs to and from school/work.

 

Axle ratio 5:38:1

43 teeth on the ring gear, 8 teeth on the pinion. 43/8 = 5.3750, close enough to 5.38

 

Is that ok for road use?

 

I run 5.38 gears, but I also have a v6 and 35" tires. Its fine for me, but when I had an Fhead and ran stockish size tires, I ran out of gearing to go much more than 50 mph without too many RPMs

 

Which engine? 5.38s are fine with the F134, but such a Jeep was not built to travel at modern highway speed. Boulevard speed is good... "road use?" - boulevards are roads.

 

I have an F-134 and 31x10.50 x15 tires. The whole intention of the jeep is for my oldest son to go to school, since in about one year he would be driving. I would not expect nothing over 50 mph. If everything is how it should, I guess that should be the same ratio in the rear, right? Besides, is within the plans to add an overdrive depending how it behaves on the daily conmute (and available funds).

 

Yes, must be the same front and rear, or something will break. Rear will be a little different actual ratio because of a different tooth counts, but both will be close enough to be called 5.38s.

Overdrive will help, but the F134 in a Jeep has a limited top speed regardless of gearing. Not enough power to overcome drag at any substantially higher MPH, whatever the engine speed.

 

Does anyone know the pinion nut size for the dana 25? Thanks!

Socket size could be 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" ...
