On my spicer 18 rebuild I currently have the front bearing retainer installed (but no yoke) and I have the rear bearing retainer installed with starter pack of shims (but no companion flange or yoke). I am guessing that I now install the front and rear flanges before checking for end play but just wanted to be sure.

No yokes to set end play. Install the front output housing like you have to seat the front bearing cup to proper depth, then check end-play at the rear output shaft. Adjust with shims as needed. Easier to start with extra shims and work your way down to proper end-play.

Also easier to leave off the parking brake backing plate and speedo drive gear while establishing the proper shim pack.

This is a good video, jump to the 33 min mark or so for end-play process...

Then I must have left something out by accident because at the moment there is tons of movement. Could use a tape measure to check end play right now. What in the world could I have left out - its such a basic setup.

Did you install the thrust washer and snap ring before installing the front bearing on the shaft?
(18 min mark in the video previously posted)

Great Video, Tim. It took me forever to get mine shimmed, but judging by that video I feel it is right, thanks for sharing.

My recommendation is to install the yokes, washers, and nuts without the seals to check endplay. This ensures all the bearings, speedo gear, etc. are all held tight and in their proper location. Otherwise you could get a false reading. I was caught by this when I first started rebuilding these transfer cases. Drove me nuts trying to figure out why endplay kept changing...

What nickmil said. One more tip, when you have your endplay set and are ready for final assembly, slip the yoke on before you tighten the bolts on the rear bearing retainer. This helps center the seal on the surface of the yoke. Anything you can do to slow down the leaks on these t-cases is a good idea.
