OK, got my '73 CJ-5 axle back from having a Detroit swapped in. Dumped in a couple of quarts of gear oil...then two more, four total, and it's not to the plug yet...check via the axle vent on one side, and the brake tube mounting screw hole on the other side, and the the axle tubes are filling with oil....should there be an inner-side oil seal (at the diff)?? Or....is this normal? How much gear oil will this thing hold? I was expecting something similar to the results of a quick google search, 1.5 to 2.5 quarts....

When I pulled the axle shafts when I started this project, I didn't drain the gear oil, and didn't have oil running out the tubes.

Are you doing this with the diff installed? Should only take just a little over a quart.

Did the diff cover get swapped out? Sounds like a high pinion cover was installed. High pinions have the fill plug much higher than a low pinion and would explain your issue. In a rear application no axle seals on the inside like on a front application.

Yep, got a new cover same time. Fill is higher now that I look at it. I am probably going to pull off a quart or so and run it.

Take the old cover, put it next to the new cover and make a mark on the new cover where the old fill plug was at. Remove fluid until its at that level. Should get you close. You can make a dipstick out of a piece of welding wire also. Common to do on York and Tecumseh A/C compressors for checking oil level.

Duh, finally looked close...just didn't pay any attention to the stock cover vs. the new one....here is a pic (from solidaxle.com) of the cover I used...the fill hole is pretty darn high:

I'm gonna draw off a quart, and make a dipstick.
