OK…I’m mounting my freshly rebuilt D18 to my freshly rebuilt SM465 and I found that the front output housing hits the X-mission at the shift lever mount! It seems to me that I saw an answer to this problem once but I can’t find it now, when I need it.

I bought my rebuild kits and adapter from Novak with the group but on this forum back in Feb. I’m embarrassed to say that it has taken me this long to get to this point, but I got distracted by my other hobbies. Anyway I know that several of you have done this swap recently so I’m hoping that one of you can clue me in on the details.

    Thanks!

think you need a two stick shifter for the d18.

That's what I have in there now? Has anyone done this D18 to SM465 combination that did not have this issue? This could be a real problem! I think I can take some off the side of the shifter mount (and pin) and some off the side of the case (that makes me nervous). I don't know how much I can get away with on the side of the case. I have to believe that others have dealt with this before?

    Thanks for the help!

Matt, do a search using SM 465 as your search criteria. You'll get alot of hits. Read through those that look likely. You'll find a number of guys there who have done this swap, but are not "daily" users of this forum like some of us. You can then email or PM them directly to ask for their comments/advice related to your problem.
Here's one thread qwhere the 465 install was discussed:

But I didn't see anything about D18 shifter interference. I did read about such a problem with certain D18/T18 combos, but I didn't have that problem with mine. The recommended solution for that combo was to grind 1/4" out of the case for clearance, as it's over 3/4" thick at that spot. However, that is on a T18 tranny; I don't know how thick the SM 465 might be at that spot.
HTH, good luck, keep us posted!! :coffee:

I had the same problem when I put my 465/18 together. You need to grind a fair amount off the corner of the shifter mount. Then it lines up nice.

Thank a lot guys now I have a direction to go with it.

Did you have to grind down the pin that holds the shift levers on as well or was it just a corner? Mine looked like I would have to do the whole side of the shift mech. I'm going to call Novak this morning and see what they have to say. I'm sure they've seen this before.

    Thanks again!

I just spoke with Novak and the guy told me that you have to grind away some of the shift fork boss, and possibly part of one of the ribs on trans. So there ya go, I'll get to it and let ya know how it turns out. If anyone has done this and can give an insight or two feel free, I'm all ears.

    Thanks again to everyone!

I ground my shift housing as well. I had to redrill and tap a hole in the outside ear for the shift pin retaining set screw, that holds the shift lever pin in place. IIRC I also had to shorten the pin a little. HTH

You don't need to do anything to the case. I also had to grind some of the pin with the shifter mount.

I remember on the T18/D18 install I had to grind the side of the shifter housing for the xcase, also the shifter pin, as it was a tight fit against the tranny case. I don't remember grind the trans, but I wouldn't sweat it, as others have already said the trans is pretty thick there.
