Cut Down A Cj7 Top

    Welcome to the site from W. MI. Where ya from, and got any pics? ;)

    You might try some Google searches, and for this one, some searches on some forums where there's more folks running the later CJ5's and CJ7's. I've never seen or heard of a top being cut down -- do you have some CJ5 doors to use? Seems like that would be the toughest part.

    Oh...hard top or soft?

    And matching the top railing to the top cj5 different from cj7,windshield frame swap proboble, not impossible but gonna take a lot of work.

    Why a windshield frame swap? They're the same from the cowl forward.

    I can not fathom trying to make a 7 top fit a 5. But if someone can do it I'd sure like to see it.

    Went back and re read, 81 you wouldn't. Thought about that when i was writing it just to lazy too go back and check. A friend of mine was going to do this a few years ago was even going to cut down the 7 doors to fit the 5. Decided that he would just end up ruining a good top and doors. Sold em and bought a soft top for what he got for them.

    Has anybody tried fabricating a hard top for a CJ5? I've been doing a lot of
    staring at mine and was thinking about what it would take to make an aluminum
    frame that I could then put fiberglass on or pay a topper shop to glass
    for me.

    Sounds like an excellent writeup ... unfortunately my Jeep won't even be close
    to ready for a top for quite some time.

    Reluctantly being negative. I'd agree with the above assessment.

    <edit> I'd look into replacing the later windshield with an intermediate windshield and using an early CJ steel hard top. Somebody posted a picture of a Meyer steel top on a '76-and-later Jeep here - looks like they simply made filler strips to fill between the vertical doors and narrowed windshield, and reshaped the leading edge of the roof. That would be easier (I'd think) than cutting down a 'glass CJ-7 top.
