Credible Tranny Rebuild Shop In East TN

    I am seeking recommendations for a shop to rebuild a T14 transmission in East Tennessee.

    Transmission on my 71 CJ5 began making a knocking sound earlier this week. It has the Dauntless V6 in it. Trying to get this thing mechanically right, and just unsure where to take it anymore.

    We have spoken briefly with Kyker's Extreme Automotive in Greeneville, TN, but we have not made the decision on what to do with it yet.

    Have found a good used one, but wonder if we should just rebuild the one we have.

    T14 is easy. Get a kit from Novak and have at it

    had to rebuild the T14 in jeep probity 3 times . input gear and cluster gear . might have been my heavy foot and the V6
    I agree not really hard too do . but hard parts are getting hard to find

    If nothing is broken in the transmission, overhauling with new bearings, blocking rings and small parts is not hard. If there is something broken or wrong in function, it may be difficult for an inexperienced rebuilder to identify the problem.

    The key, IMO, is to meticulously document every step of disassembly. You need to look at what you are doing, keep parts from each location separated and identified, and mark or otherwise identify each part for front and back. Your small parts kit will come with a lot of otherwise identical-looking little parts (snap rings, roller bearings, etc.) You need a caliper so you can measure the old part and select the correct replacement.

    If you are intent on having the transmission rebuilt for you, I suggest you look up 4x4 clubs in your area and contact them. Here's an example, picked randomly from the web: KnoxOffroad - The Largest Jeep Club in The Knoxville, TN Area! There are probably 4x4 forums for east TN that can refer you to a reputable shop. That said, the T-14 is pretty easy to take apart and put together. The only difficulty may be finding a replacement gear if you have a broken gear, for example. If you have the opportunity to acquire a spare transmission, it may be worthwhile to get it for the parts. Note that there are some differences in the T-14 used with the V6 and the T-14 used with the later AMC inline six engines.

    Guys I really appreciate the input. I have located a transmission that in individual took off of a Commando that had he V6 in it that is good working order.

    I know that I can also get parts from Herm for the transmission. This would be no doubt my deepest push into mechanical work, if I were to undertake it myself.

    Looks like I have a decision to make!!

    Again I appreciate everyone who posted a response. This forum is a phenomenal resource and a great community!

    Yep, this is the best route to go.
    They you know what you have instead of guessing.
