Hello out there. I have a 1966 CJ6 that I'm trying to restore. I believe the original color was Empire Blue but it was repainted.
Question: Would the fuel tank and lower floorpan transmission cover have been the body color or would they have been black in 1966? Also, if black would it have been a gloss or semi?
I have seen them both ways in older CJ's.
I found some good info on this site about CJ2A parts colors but nothing definitive about 66 CJ's. Maybe I'm not searching well enough but any help would be appreciated.

On my 69 CJ5 with factory paint, the bolt-on floor pieces and gas tank are black. From some protected areas, it appears to be gloss black. However it's old enamel gloss black and not a modern super shiny gloss black. It's somewhere between a modern semi-gloss and gloss.

My relatively unmolested one owner 67 is also "gloss" black.

There's a thread in this forum where I made a public Google Doc for folks with original Jeep paint trim to fill it out for future reference - it needs some help though:

Fireball and Duffer, thanks for the responses.
Truckee4x4, thanks for your effort on that thread. I found it in my search and it has a lot of great 2A info. I would love to see some early 5 info come together like that. I'll post up if I find anything.
    Take care

Your also suposed to have a gloss black windshield frame, along with the same black for the fuel tank and floor plates.
It bugs me when these items are body color.

Thanks for the info Donny. I like the black windshield frames a lot and I’m going with that. I think I’ve seen universal floor panels and tanks in both body color and black. I think it might depend on the year…?

My 60 originally had a black tank, windshield frame, and Transmission cover.

I'm pretty sure all the pre-'72 CJs left the factory with black floor plates (the bolt-in transmission tunnel panels) underseat tanks, and windshield frames.
In the past 50+ years, there have been a lot of Jeeps painted however owners saw fit. I have a collection of some period factory brochures and literature, and the original colors are very consistent, though some of the literature has components painted colors like yellow or red to draw your attention to particular features.

The red in this one threw me off when I was planning my engine repainting:

There seems to be some consensus the first few hundred CJ5s in 1955 had body color windshields and floor pans. See this post and the one following: Original Color for Windshield Hinges
