I drove my jeep to work yesterday, and on the way home, I got a giant puff of white steam. I pulled over, and when I looked under the hood, coolant was leaking on the ground and all over everything. I towed it home, inspected all the hoses, refilled the radiator, started it up, drove it into my shed and it seemed fine. no burst hoses. what happened? where did the fluid expel from?

    How about that radiator cap?
Edit: Pressure test the system just to be sure everything is sound.

Soft plug. Core plug. Freeze plug. The stamped steel or brass circles that fill holes in the block from the foundry casting process. Should be a few on sides of the block and probable some small ones on the head casting.

do I need to remove anything to gain access? not much on the googeler showing this. by "much", I mean nothing. if it was a freeze plug, how could I fill it back up? wouldn't it all just leak out again right away?

Where does your overflow empty out/in to? There is a little nipple exiting next to your radiator cap. If it simply overheated, coolant and steam will blast out of that little opening (or the hose that is attached to it) in a dramatic fashion.

Now, if it "simply" overheated, you need to find out why.

How much coolant did it take to refill it?

I did not catch that you were able to refill it. If you refilled and it held coolant then must have lifted the spring loaded pressure relief function of the radiator cap.

I was able to put a half gallon or so in. The overflow empties into nothing.

    Oof.
Do you have a real temp guage? Or just the factory one in the cluster?

The temp gauge works right? Could you get the engine up to operating temp and look for leaks?

    Water pump
Usually it leaks from a seal or gasket. Does it have a weep hole?

That's where I was going with the cap pressure question. The aftermarket radiator might have a cap that is a higher pressure than the water pump is designed to handle and it blew the seal.

Or, it's time was just up.

The manual shows both a 7psi and a 15psi cap being used for the 134. Not sure of applications beyond that.

Maybe? When its running there is a steady drip drip going into the fan. When i turn the jeep off it seems to leak from this area in a steady stream down to the bottom of the motor. Pic may show it?

So..water pump replacement or just gasket replacement?

if I get a new water pump ,am i going to have the same problem in a week with the psi concern you stated?

Should I replace the pump since I have to take it off to get at the gasket anyway?

Also noticed that bolt half out. Probably something to do with my dilemma.
