Ok , so now you think it's not loosing oil and it's just slow to get back to the pan and dipstick???...........Check it every other day after it's been driven daily.................If it is not knocking and still maintaining oil pressure......what's the problem?

I'm thinking the same, I still have the low cylinder but I'm waiting on my cylinder leak tester to get in tommorow.

Well, to me using oil pressure as a way to know you have enough oil would only be done out of desperation. Maybe it's just me, but I like to be reasonably certain that when I look at the dipstick the oil level indication is correct.

Humm..........if it's not leaking and not burning it and it's just slow to return to the pan ..........and you can confidently measure it on the dipstick over a given period of time when cold..........and it's not knocking and still maintaining oil pressure.

    Drive it

Changing the oil and filter, and starting with a known quantity of 5 quarts, would temporarily be feasible if he can't easily find the cause of slow return. He could then monitor it and determine how long it has to sit until the dipstick shows full. At least when it sits for that period of time he could probably and reasonably determine oil usage.

Ha, great minds think alike. So checked drains from top and side valve covers. Did not find any problems, motor has some sludge in the side cover cleaned it out. Pored ATF in with oil and Sea foam. Turned motor over a lot. Drained oil mixture refilling and draining again.

I drive it most of the time local, unless I'm fixing or rebuilding something.

Does it get fully up to operating temperature? I'm just wondering if it will over time get better, maybe some sludge will get dissolved by clean, hot oil?

Doesn't really look too bad considering the compression issues.

Got leak down tester today. Ran a quick test. Sounds like 1 rings, 2,3,4 exhaust. I'm going to recheck tommorow, take top and side covers off to make sure I'm at top dead center for each cylinder. But I'm thinking I'll be doing a exhaust valve job. Made a tool to pull valve guides from block, new exhaust valves and springs will be in next week. Any advice for replacing valve guides and exhaust valves? I'm planning on just lapping valves, replacing valve guides. What thoughts do the experts have?

So the one with the best compression is rings? If so, 100 isn't too bad a number and if the exhaust valves bring the other numbers up then it should obviously run a bit better. Since the head will be off it certainly wouldn't hurt to take a good look at the cylinder walls and piston fit. Personally I would be bound and determined to figure out the slow oil draining issue. You know you could try pouring oil in the head drain holes and the same on the side of the block....that should give a pretty quick answer.
