Just a size, .010, .020 etc. In other words the oversize number.

A stamped number indicating if the pistons/bores are oversize (eg .030, or .040 etc, indicating a rebuild.)

If it was me, I'd look for oil in the vacuum pump line that connects to the pcv/carb. Or in the pump's vacuum diaphragm chamber.

Sounds like you think it's a for sure rebuild.

Not me. Just that's the reason for the numbers, if any.

I ran it yesterday with the line off while I checked vacuum no oil was coming out. If I cap off the pvc and run it will it damage anything?

Don't have an fhead anymore but I'd like to offer; nos pvc valve installed and now using oil. That's would I would check first. Not sure if they can be install backwards but something is causing pressure in the crankcase. Pressure in the there will push oil out the easiest path, seals or rings. Before the pcv system was used, a road draft tube allowed the excess vapors to escape. A way to test the theory would be to run the jeep with the oil fill cap off and see if it uses less oil.

I've never seen pistons stamped for size before is that on all rebuilds?

Let me clarify. I suspect vacuum from the intake manifold could be sucking oil from the crankcase, through a fault inside the pump.

If I pull the vacuum lines off and inspect for oil that would be how I would check this?

    Possibly.

Or, as I said, look for oil in the vaccuum chamber of the pump. And I would still want to know if the PCV valve is working right.

Check the obvious first and eliminate the norms..................do a leak down test on the motor..........it will tell you whether or not the leak is going by the rings , valves , guides or perhaps into the coolant.........if all checks out it's either on the ground or as Daryl noted earlier what does the exhaust pipe look like?.............Plugs do not look like it's burning the volume of oil you say it's using.................. Might be leaking guides on the exhaust side. Check the tail pipe.

I only mentioned the pistons for use as a reference/clue as to whether someone had gone into the engine.

I agree that the plugs look ok. With the exhaust valves in the block could the guides still account for oil consumption?

I guess I'm not to sure on this one, would I pull bottom of pump to see if oil is there or? How do you check the pvc?
