Anyone know the spline count for the output shaft on an early Commando t-400?

I'm 99% sure the spline count of the actual output shaft of the transmission is 32 .

Only on GM transmissions, AFAIK. Jeep transmissions have a unique output shaft that is the last thing to come out of the case when taken apart. As I recall, when you put a SBC in an early Wagoneer, you take the two transmissions apart and put the Jeep output shaft in the Chevy pattern case.

I could be wrong - but this has come up a lot on the FSJ sites and I'm pretty sure the Dana 20 Jeeps have an output shaft that's different from the GM apps. Advance says 32 spline, which is the GM spline count, but I'd believe Novak before them. http://www.advanceadapters.com/tech-vault/gm-th400/

Advance is absolutely wrong about the 230 getting the TH400 - it never did. The only automatic used with the 230 was the Borg-Warner automatic, and only with the one-speed Dana 21 transfer case. This is descibed correctly on the Novak site. The TH400 first appeared in late '65, behind the AMC/Rambler 232 I6 and the AMC 327 V8.

Maybe there is a spud shaft that goes from the 32 spline output to the 15 spline bull gear.

The Quadratrac BW13xx output shaft is definitely 10 splines.

In this case Novak is correct. Every Jeepster, Commando, Wagoneer with a D20 has a 32 spline output, the difference being the Jeeps all have a groove for an O ring to seal where the shaft goes into the sleeve or spud. I don't believe Chevy in most cases had that groove but my mind is kind of fuzzy on that, been too many years since I worked on one.

Oh, ok, so there is a spud shaft. The spud shaft (same as sleeve?) converts from 32 to 15 splines.

You guys are way over my head. I have received such a wealth of information from you guys and many others (too many to count) on this forum. 9 times out of 10 I can query and find the answer I'm looking for, or at least pretty darn close. Often I feel like I have nothing to offer on this forum....other than THANKS!.....for sharing your knowledge.

Don't worry, many of us have been dealing with Jeeps for over 40/50 years. Lot's of times usless info floating around our brains. You will have your chance too.

This is correct. The o-ring groove is why when people use the Chev output shaft the transmission pumps fluid into the transfer case overfilling it. BTDT.
