    Hi all!

Late fall my jeep became my full time daily driver. It has been doing well.

Lately I have been noticing noise coming from my clutch. It changes when the pedal is depressed and let out. Started out just a little but seems to be getting louder and when the pedal isn't depressed. My clutch is working fine no slipping.

Question: Is my throw out bearing going bad? What is going on?

Does it still have free play when engaged? That is, is the throwout bearing pulled away from the clutch fingers? My guess is that yes, the bearing is shot, but if the linkage is properly adjusted it shouldn't be making noise when released. A broken return spring can also cause this. This could be why the bearing wore out and it can do some significant damage to the clutch fingers in the process. Something to look at when you pull the bell housing.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the noise isn't coming from parts in the drivetrain other than the throwout bearing. It would seem to me that if it were the throwout bearing, the noise would be greatest when the clutch pedal is depressed and the throwout bearing is under load. For this reason I would think the bearing noise is from the tranny. My experince is that the main input bearing goes bad first followed by the needle bearings between it and the main shaft. The bearings supporting the countershaft seldom go bad. Good luck.

When the clutch is disengaged, you have no transmission movement if you are sitting still. As said prior, make sure you have clutch free play and your return spring is good and strong.
