Hi guys so my 1965 CJ5 is having an odd problem. No matter how I adjust the clutch it seems to work for about a 1/4 mile and then it is not making enough contact to change gears or take the Jeep out of gear without killing the engine.

To be clear, when I first adjust it. I crank the Jeep and it is working, in no time at all it is no longer working and if I try to crank the Jeep with the clutch to the floor the Jeep still takes off in gear.

The clutch itself is new and I think the pressure plate was also.

    Any ideas?

If it's all new ...............look at your linkage and adjustment , that is all that is left.

You must have enough travel in your adjustment system to fully release the pressure plate..........that travel should also include some free play at the top of the pedal travel of say 1"..........................first things first what do you have for linkage? Still floor mounted pedals? Pictures.

Like Tarry said, check the linkage. Sounds like it's worn out.

Maybe the disc is breaking in.

They often drag a bit at first.

The linkage is new. I can probably take some pictures when it cools down a little.

I have a feeling PeteL might be right but it is hard to be sure.

Lol, ok time for a laugh when I tell you what it was.

The bolt that holds the pedal was missing and when I would push it down the pedal was pushing in about half an inch. When I took my foot off the springs pushed it back into place - so no matter how I adjusted it the pedal always slid out a half inch or so.

Nuts but hey it works now

Now that was an easy one. Glad you got it figured out.
