Hey fellas, I'm working on a 1970 cj5 v6 225. I had a clutch problem a couple weeks ago. Clutch wouldn't disengage the flywheel. It did this a year ago and I adjusted the cable, clutch worked for another year. Now, no amount of adjusting would fix the problem.....so I began the task of removing the clutch with the help of lots of good input from the forum members here. So here I am, the clutch is out and I can't see anything obvious that might be wrong other than maybe the pressure plate isn't moving like it should. Had anyone here experienced this type of problem? Btw, the clutch is a "Borg & Beck."

I myself wouldn't go back with 3 finger diaphragm , I just think they are too hard to push down . you can get a diaphragm clutch set up . and I think you would be much happier with that set up . but that's just my opinion . I've had clutch cables stretch or break with 3 finger clutches (12spring) , and don't forget to have flywheel resurfaced

Need to check that cable and make sure it has ample lube inside between the housing and cable...........most likely it will need to come off to do so..........they will get rusted up and or sometimes corroded inside. ........needs to also be installed so there is no tight bends and secured in the middle with a cable clamp so that there is no loss of motion in the housing when it is engaged or moved by the pedal...........they work great if you understand there needs.

" no amount of adjusting would fix the problem..."

Clutch friction plates do just stick to the flywheel sometimes, with rust, mouse pee, or whatever.

Releasing the pressure plate (pushing the pedal down) will have no effect on freeing it, regardless of adjustment. Like pushing a rope...

Usually can be cured with some senseless violence by starting in gear, then if necessary some forceful driving/engine action with the pedal down.

There's currently a couple of OEM NOS Borg Becks on ebay. Cheap !
One is a three finger type and the other is a diaphragm type.

On my 70 there is no housing around the cable. It's just an open straight cable going from the jackshaft by the t-case up to the clutch fork. There's a solid steel link from clutch pedal back to the jack shaft.

The one time my clutch seemed to lose throw was when the frame side mount for the jack shaft bent/broke. Make sure and check that.

The Novak site has a lot of good info on clutches.

    Good luck

Do you know a build date for your '70? My '70 has a build date of Oct. '69, and it has the cable with the housing instead of the earlier bellcrank and pull rod.
I like this system better than the bellcrank because it has fewer moving parts. Lubing the cable is an issue however, mine has a little bit of binding friction. One of the items on my To Do list is making a fixture to pump grease into that cable housing.

    Don,
I do not know my build date. I have the under the seat gas tank.
I can try to do some research, if I can figure it out I'll let you know.

Don, my vin is 8305017 362463. From the "lost years" chart that would put the build date in Oct. 1969. I can't confirm that but it's probably correct.

Mine is 362769. It has the original decal on the dash showing build date of Oct. '69. That puts ours about 300 units apart. I don't know how many units daily they were building back then in Toledo. Sometime during that interval they apparently stopped using the bellcrank shaft and went to the clutch cable for the V6 Jeeps.

and...that clutch cable was available in kit form (cable, brackets, nuts and bolts) as well.
Any V6 Jeep could use it...which means any PO could purchase the kit and install it on their Jeep.
That clutch cable kit is what I have on my 2A with a 225.

Truth be known as most factories did in the past ............they put whatever they had in front of them on at the time......old inventory did not necessarily go first.

Mine is 354046, only cable I have is 12" long or so from the bell crank to the shift fork and a lot of linkages. I think I like the AA cable and sprocket design.
