OK - I think I had the pplate torqued too tight, but can not find anything with firm numbers. When I put the setup in, I used the specs for the standard Jeep V6 with a diaphram clutch. We could not get the clutch to fully release so we pulled it today and am going to put a longer arm in (though not sure it's really needed - just makes me feel better), but I wanted to check the torque specs as well.

I am seeing everything from 15# to 40#. Anybody else got a good number on them for the setup?

You might c check to see for sure that the friction plate is in the right way. I put one in backwards once and it would not disengage. The torque specs should be for bolt size if I remember right.

X3. The only way I figured this out was the springs on the disk were dragging on the flywheel bolts.

clutch to flywheel: 30-40 ft lbs
you might just take some material off the splined hub face of the disc while it's out.
I had one that was too long, and the disc was jammed into the input shaft splines.

Well - I had it at 35# per V6 stock specs, but found many articles with them set at 20# for the clutch I put in (smaller input shaft than the stock and GM setups for the Ford T18 )... It was not in backwards, I know what you mean there as one of my boys did that already on another project.

While I had it hanging on the hoist, with them torqued at 20# I finally got it to work around so that in gear I could turn the motor (by hand) and use a cheater bar to engage the clutch and hold the output of the tcase by hand. There was no way I could do that before.

Time to throw it all back in tomorrow evening and see how it acts (going to have to redo my Hydro slave mount though with the longer arm now).

Is it a heavy duty clutch? I put a HD in my 5 and fought that thing trying to get it to work. Custom made ball stud inn the bell, hyd racing slave cylinder, and it still pushes hard. It'll come out and be replaced by a standard duty unit one of these days. It's a bear on the trail.

Is the pilot bushing new? Has it been turned? A tight pilot bushing will cause these symptoms until you break it in. Have the same thing happen to me twice now when I have installed bronze bushings, possibly on account of they are custom turned for the T-18 input shaft.

I do know what you mean on the torque specs and even commented on this same issue a couple years ago in a thread around here somewhere that when I torqued my clutch down to 40lbs the fingers on the diaphragm went flat. Been running at 35lbs for years now. GM clutch with a Wilwood slave.

The fit on the pilot was one of the things I checked while it was out. As best I could tell, it had a good slip fit. We even mounted it all up without the clutch to check for clearance and make sure the splines were not too close to the pilot as well. I did tap it in a touch more, but I don't think it was an issue.

Its a Sache's clutch - supposed to be for the 70's era jeep with the T18. It has a Chevy TO bearing and now a stiff, cast Chevy fork arm in it as well. The slave is a Speedway, but that may get swapped to the Wilwood I have to help take a possible issue out of the equation.
