I've been trying to get the back window clearer than it is. I have been using Novus products to try to clean and buff it. Does anyone have a tried and true method?

    Thanks

I searched and the only thread said to use the kit from Novus, McGuires and lemon pledge. I tried the Novus and pledge with some improvements. Any other IDEAS?

Any pics? There are times the windows are not salvageable.

The plastic over time breaks down due to UV light so they might not ever get clear.

A local upholstery shop that caters to boat owners can replace the vinyl windows. May be worthwhile if the rest of the fabric is in good condition.

THIS ONLY WORKS WITH CLEAR PLASTIC. Tinted plastic will lighten if you used a candy spray paint or other method to tint your clear windows this will not work. You will need to use chemicals that will soften the plastic with tinted windows.

This method will work to remove the light scratches on the outside that you can not feel from the inside. Those (tree branch scratches) can not be removed only lightened.

Clean off the plastic using water only(remove any build up of chemicals as it will melt in) with a very hot (not windy) day in the forecast. On that hot day lay the window(s) outside in the sun for a hour or so or until it becomes very hot to the touch.
Move the window inside(leaving the other windows outside so they stay hot) so it will not sway around and hang it up vertically(if it is a super top use the plastic drip edge and a wire. If it is a button top you need to borrow some snaps from the jeep). Use some bungie cords on the bottom corners to hold the top firm without pulling it to tight. You are just trying to hold the plastic upright so you can see through it.
Put a light drop light on the floor and aim it up at the plastic from behind(the inside of the plastic) this will let you see the scratches easily without blinding you.

Then using a heat gun(see link below) heat the plastic you will see the scratches even out.
Don't get to greedy here you will see them even out but this is something that will take a couple tries. If you try to get it in one try you will warp the plastic (ask me how I know). It will take 3-4 times working from on side to the other (left to right then left to right. NOT left to right then right to left). Work in a sweeping motion making not to focus on a area for more then 2 seconds.

Take your time 3 windows usually takes me around 2 hours. Have done this for a few buddies. It works and only requires a heat gun and some time.

Here is a link I found that is as close to a walk through I can give you.

    http://maic.jmu.edu/journal/10.2/r&d/heafitz/heafitz.htm

Don't know about a "drying oven" or whatever just ignore that part. Same goes for putting anything in your oven.
This is just a example link so you can see the results of a just using a heat gun.

I've used Mcguires (sp?) for years with good luck. First use the cleaner, then I use the polish, then the cleaner again to get all the residue off. I've saved lots of windows that way. If this doesn't work then I'd try the heat gun method.
