    Hey gang,

I'm trying to assemble a Dana 44 front axle for my Willys Truck project. It is a J10 axle that someone cut down to Wagoneer width, which will work good for the truck.

The axle shafts it came with have 27 spline outers and it had 7/8" rotors (with calipers) and an internal locking hub housing attached to it, both 5 on 5.5".

So, not finding a 27" spline internal locking hub I decided to switch the internal locking hub to an external locking hub type housing. Then I can use the axle shafts I already have and some Warn locking hubs I already have. I purchased new hub assemblies for a 1979 CJ7, but they do not have splines in the lug holes to secure the wheel studs. Does this sound right or are these the wrong hubs (for drum brakes)?

I can't find a CJ disc brake hub with splines in the lug holes on the net. Thanks for any advice.

FYI, the part number of the hub assembly I purchased is Crown Automotive 5358568H Front Brake Hub. It lists as a disc or drum hub, but I have a suspicion that this is a drum only hub.

I am not sure the spindles for the internal ford hubs you have will work with the D30 hubs. You're gonna need to figure that one out..

What I can tell you is that the D30 hubs you bought are machined for the disks. The splines you're talking about for the lug studs self cut when you press them in.

OK, good. That is a big help. I was expecting the splines to already be there like they are on the lug holes for the internal hubs. I can press them in then.

I have a (drum brake) CJ Dana 30 axle to get parts from if needed, but so far the spindles that were on this axle appear to be the same as the Dana 30. I've swapped bearings back and forth on them as a check.

Drum D30s do my have teh hubs machined flat and true for the disk. Also drum D30 spindles are not the same as disk spindles. The d30 disk hubs will work with all D25/27/30 spindles, just use the right inner bearing. The Spindles for the disk d30 have an enlarged OD at the mount side. They use a different bearing. They can ALL work together though if you have the right parts.

Most likely the existing splines in the internal hubs are leftover from having studs pressed into them in the past.
Internal locking hubs won’t work with 27 spline shafts intended for external hubs as the shaft length is too short.

Thanks for the help guys. I was stuck without your help. I'm new to assembling axle parts, so this has been a bit like trying to solve a puzzle. I got everything put back together this weekend and the axle will go on the frame later this week. My 15 year old son was a big help with installing the locking hubs and brake calipers. This stuff seems to come pretty natural for him. A good garage weekend!
