    Hello. I'm currently working on a 64 CJ6 and a 69 CJ5.

The CJ6's rear end locked up on the owner, and they just swapped it out with a rear end from the 69 CJ5. I'm trying to repair the CJ6's original rear end (it looks like a bearing blew up), so I'm trying to puzzle out how to remove the hub and axle so I can check it out. There's a big castle-nut with a cotter pin under a dust cap at the wheel, and it's stuck on like nobody's business. Does anyone know the size of this nut? I think I need to get an impact wrench on it to loosen it. I'd go check myself, but the Jeep is 160 miles away, and I'd like to gather all my tools before I head out there again.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Great forum you have here!

You should be able to google the process, and you are going to need a hub puller. Get this one from Amazon, and that $121 price is a good deal. I would buy a service manual if you intend to do rear axle work. Edit: The 69 axle should be the same for all intents as long as the gear ratio is the same.

Yep, got one of those. I'm just trying to figure out the size of that castle nut so I can get some impact sockets that fit it.

The nut that holds the hub on the model 44 two piece axle on my 55CJ5 and the 53A1 takes a 1-7/16 inch socket.
