Hello fellow Jeepers, I’m from Australia and I stumbled across this old CJ6 overlander while looking for parts for my 74 CJ6. After some quick research, exchanging a few photos I just had to have it so I bought it sight unseen. I had a few issues with the transport company getting it home but I finally got it.
I’m honestly pretty happy with the condition, yes it has some rust as the body was made over timber stringers which are rusting out (nothing that can’t be fixed), apparently has the original 188 or 200 engine and radiator in the tray and has a 250 and alloy radiator fitted. Other non original items are a warn overdrive, has dual steering dampers, the rear shock mounts, tail lights and a respray or 2. The Speedo shows 25,000 miles. There is very little to no information about these old Jeeps in Australia, the most information I’ve found is on CJ3Binfo
I’ll post some pics as I’m sure you would like to see the old girl, any questions or pics you want let me know.
And plans for the old girl.... short term is get the brakes working correctly (the PO said the brakes need attention), new tyres and drive it occasionally.... long term possibly a restoration if the rust gets any worse....

Really interesting. Must be explored carefully. What was the use of it before?

There is some old brochures on cj3binfo... Jeeps in that era were imported as knock down rebuilds, mostly as CJ5’s. They were extended to CJ6’s in a QLD factory using ford falcon engines/ parts, hence the ford engine, they called them combat 5’s or 6’s. They also hand built some overlanders, extending the chassis to 110 inches, using a fibreglass roof and hand building the rest of it. A timber tray back was standard with a ute back as an option.
There is no build history on any of these old Jeeps as they were lost when AMC then Chrysler took over...
Apparently they were approx 600 (another source states 420) of these falcon powered Jeeps built in total, mostly CJ5’s and 6’s. I’ve only been able to find a few photos of overlander’s online so I presume there’s only a few survivors...

Well that's surely an unusual CJ6. I think it's a cool project, but I am biased toward liking CJ6s. Lol

I would think any info your going to find will have to come from someone in your country I been looking at everything pre 1980 jeep on line since 2000 and into Jeeps in the real world since 1962 this is the first one I have seen. I even missed any info on the CJ3B page on them.

Ewillys had an article about the Willys truck with a really similar rear bed. They were from another country as well. I can't find it at the moment. You may want to email Dave at Ewillys. He has a lot of info.

That's excellent! Greetings from Boston! We have heard of the Ford-powered Austrailian Jeeps here (with the "Combat 6!"), but this is the best and closest - maybe to only 1st-hand - look we've had. I am surprised that there were so few made, if that's the right production numbers. The Falcon engine is quite short for an inline 6, and it would be interesting to see the CJ-5s built with their short wheelbase and these longer engines. Normally the inline 6 is too long for a CJ-5, though here have been at least one or two NA CJ-5s converted to the Falcon engines.

Wow! So cool! . I’ve never seen anything like it. My vote is a reasonable restomod. Fix and upgrade but keep it fairly stock looking. :)

In any case, thanks for sharing!

There is limited information over here even on our ausjeep forum, rumours are that no 2 “combat jeeps” left the QLD factory the same over here. Like I said, there’s a few CJ5’s and 6’s around but only a few overlander’s. I’ve seen 3 photos online so far and one was sitting on a J20 chassis so nowhere near original. I’m time poor atm with a young family and work commitments so not much will happen with the old girl apart from sit in the shed, although I would like to get the brakes working correctly, some tyres and drive it occasionally. It’s in a dry climate so it will not deteriorate!
I’m happy to post any more pics for anyone to appreciate the old girl!!!
    Cheers Danny
