Fooling with the wiring on the Jeep. Getting very frustrated. Wiring is my weak point on this build. I have a Franken build, got drive train from one place and tub from another, so I had nothing to go off of or to take pictures of. I searched and found a few threads but pictures are lost. I got a 69 CJ5 w/ V-6, running a remote voltage regulator

I got a wiring harness from Walck's, I am trying to figure out the alternator wires now.

Here is the alternator that I got from O'Reillys, there are two plugs and two studs

    The wiring harness has 2 red 12 ga., 2 gray 16 ga. , 1 black w/ white tracer 16 ga. and 1 green w/ white tracer w/ a plug, 16 ga.

I know where the 2 red go.

Do all the other wires go to the other stud?

Which side do I plug the wire into with the plug?

One of the gray wires goes a bulb that is in the instrument cluster.

    Any pictures will help

Which regulator are you using? Is that supposed to be a direct replacement for the original Motorola alternator?

There was a Delco on the engine, so that is what I got for a replacement. The voltage regulator has a 3 wire pig tail coming out of it.

The alternator has not been installed, so I can return it.

The green/white, black/white and gray wires coming from the same loom in my pic, is from the regulator on the fender.

I traced the wires on my harness. The green/white, black/white and 1 gray wire, go to the plug for the voltage regulator.

So it looks like I need to take the Delco back and get a Motorola alternator. I got the alternator at O'Reillys, where do I get a pulley, from looking on-line, it looks like the alternator does not come with one?

I found a 5/8" pulley for my GM one wire that I have on my garage motor, I don't remember where I found it though. It allows you to use the factory belt on a GM one wire alternator. You might find it on E-Bay, I will look in my receipt box to see if I can find where I got it. I would ground the alternator to the motor too. Good Luck

Got a Motorola alternator. Put it on the alternator bracket and had to space it. Is my bracket wrong? Does anyone have a correct alternator part number and supply house that carries it?

Keep in mind that I've never had the pleasure to actually have to deal with the care and feeding of a 225 Dauntless, but I have later Buick 3.8s. And that alternator bracket sure has that late 70s/early 80s GM look about it. Is it a Jeep 225 or a later Buick engine? If it came out of a GM, that mount was made for a Delco instead of a Motorola.

Almost forgot, don't put too much trust in the abilities of the guys at OReillys to find the right part. Most of them only know what's in their computer. Try getting common automotive parts to use on a 51 Farmall tractor from them. When they couldn't findt a old school points type resister coil for it, I gave up on them.

Unfortunately, I don't have a parts book that covers a 1970 CJ-5. However, looking at the RockAuto site, the Motorola alternator they show for 1970 seems to have a thicker mount than the one you got.

The thin side is threaded for the slotted strap bracket, and the thick bracket should go into the cast aluminum bracket, maybe with a washer or two. Possible there are spacers that go in there - the parts book would show them.

Tim, that looks like the one I have. There is a 2 inch space in the bracket, if you look at pulley width and the mounting bracket they are close. I would guess that the mount is a inch +-.

That is a very salient point that I should have read before.

This is the alternator for a 1964 Skylark -

Looks like we have a winner. Is it a factory 225?

The original Delcotron alternator would used a mechanical type external regulator.

Here is a solid state regulator of the proper type for the Delcotron. More Information for AIRTEX/WELLS 1V1038

Wiring diagram for the Delcotron -

Here is a pic of the alternator Focker posted. Looks like the the lower mount is 2 inches wide.

I got a Walck's wiring harness. Do not remember if there was a alternator option on the work sheet.

I hate to cut in to the new wiring harness.

I am taking a road trip, in a few days, about 2 1/2 hours one way to this guy house. He said he has 2, 69's V-6. Will be looking at the wiring and layout of things under the hood. He has about a dozen early Jeeps, will pick his brain.

    Two questions/things

    1. Is the alternator in the picture 37 amp?

    2. If you can, what is the measurement of the bracket where the alternator sits. May be hard to get a good measurement, mine is 2 inches.
