    Hey y’all, first post,

    I got a 66 cj5 with a 302 and t-90 with overdrive.
Slowly putting it together, been made from multiple cj5’s.

tried to move it the other day, here’s what happens, Gears feel good in tranny, clutch feels good but no movement. It will move with 4x4 engaged. Rear driveshaft rotates even in neural.

T- case issue? Output shaft? I plan on pulling t-case for inspection, but hoping to get some insight.

    thanks

If the driveshaft rotates then there is something wrong in the rear differential. It's common to move a little bit but not a full rotation.

 That can't be unless the axle/differential is toast.

Ya full rotation when I push the jeep. But when the jeep is running and I put in gear, driveshaft doesn’t move.

Ok, misinterpretation of what you meant. That's normal, and expected, for it to rotate when the vehicle is moving.

Something has to be wrong in the transfer case for it to only move with the front axle driven.

Welcome from up the road in Colorado Springs!
When you say neutral, do you mean trans in neutral or tcase?

Looks like with tranny and t-case in neutral the drive shaft still rotates when I push jeep fwd and backwards. But when motets running and transfer case engaged and I put tranny in gear it won’t drive.

    hope that makes since

The tires/wheels turn the axle shafts which turn the differential which turns the drive shaft. That's why you see the drive shaft rotate while rolling. Does your transfer case have 2 shift levers?

Oh. Not what it sounded like at first.

" transfer case engaged" Are you really sure??? Interference or slop not preventing full lever movement?

So it appears my overdrive was mabie stuck. I pulled the cover in cab to verify t-case was fully ingaging

started her up put in fwd and it moves, took it out of 4x4 it moves! I don’t have a lever for my overdrive just the 2 for 4x4, I did pull the overdrive shaft out prior to try to move.

Do you have a transfer case drive gear to replace overdrive bowl gear so you can totally remove/eliminate the O/D from the equation?
Are you sure the clutch is adjusted/functioning properly?

I have a Ramsey winch I could put on, I’m gonna attach the overdrive lever. I kinda like having it, once the restore is completed I plan on driving daily.

There is a "neutral" position on the overdrive. I've had mine do that before.

Yup - that can be the issue without the shifter to make sure its IN or OUT... that in between has bitten me while work on them too.
