I will be ordering a reproduction glove box from walcks4wd.com on Monday (Seems to be the best I can find and its Made in USA) and I just realized there seems to be a decent size gap between the glove box door and the dash that could easily let water in.

Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a gasket or seal to somewhat waterproof the glove box so it doesn't fill with water? Is there a common fix that can be made to somewhat waterproof it? Mostly I plan on only having non-valuable things in the glove box like registration and things like that, but If I can get a mostly secure glove box I may put things in there like cell phone, GPS, Springfield Armory Bang Bang ;)

I also read up a while back someone installed a Stainless Steel food tray instead of those plastic repop glove boxes? I think it was one of those you see at Chinese restaurants and motels filled with food and either ice under them or hot water/steam>

Any Ideas/ Pictures/ Recommendations are appreciated.

I keep my registration and proof of insurance in a zip lock baggie in my glove box just in case of water getting in......

I just put mine in the tool box. My glove box door was bolted shut by the PO. Never fixed it because I've never needed it.

Currently for the last year and a half that I have owned my jeep, the registration and everything else has been in my tool box under the seat in a ziplock. but since I have a spot for a glove box I figure I might as well install a glovebox. right now its just a hole in the dash with a locking glove box lid.

I am still doing more research on google as we speak and I just found someone saying a .50 cal ammo box is a perfect fit. but after measuring the can I have, the can is a little larger than the glove box opening but its close enough it would probably work.

You can get repro plastic glove boxes that go all the way back to the firewall. I have one, & it holds a ton of stuff. It's a nice little upgrade that doesnt change the appearance of the dash at all. As far as sealing it, how about some regular foam tape from a hardware store?

I made my glove box with galvanized steel bent with hammer and rivet gun, placed a stereo near fire wall. Radio still works and it's rained with no top a few times.

I keep registration and insurance in my wallet so it's dry and safe.

Original box had no seal, just two little rubber bumpers. I would imagine a custom gutter over the box door might help it stay dry.

Some people have mounted an ammo can for the box interior. An ammo can bolted down between the front seats can make a very good weather-tight storage.

I would love to add an ammo box between my seats but since I have a factory equipped 2/3 seat there is literally zero space between the seats. the driver seat ends right at the passenger flip up (jump?) seat.

And the rain gutter over the lid of the box is a good idea I hadn't thought of, and it probably wouldn't be that hard to make

You can buy different sizes/thicknesses of rubber weather stripping that should do the trick.

I saw somewhere here I think to pick up a stainless food pan that's roughly the same size opening.

I did, it seems to fit in my mockup (me holding it behind the dash).

Now the important part... $9 plus tax. The repro plastic ones seems a bit spendy.

I haven't fabbed it in yet, Picts when I do.

I've also got the over sized plastic insert. I like it. Lots of room for stuff.

I had no glove box door when I got the jeep but found one at a junk yard.

I went to the local Chrysler dealer & got a locking latch.

Does anyone have a link to where I can buy that oversized box so I can check it out?

Be aware the '76 and newer glove box is different from the '71 and older. Found out the hard way. The opening is a different size and the screw holes do not line up. IIRC the '76 and newer is larger so there is a Significant gap Where it would screw to the dash flanges. Not sure if the '72-'75 is the same as the early, same as the late, or unto itself. Maybe Jpflat2a, Timgr, or Oldtime has some info on this.

Figured I would give an update on what I have chosen for my glove box. I checked into the stainless food tray idea and it did have some upsides such as being stainless it shouldn't rust, and because of its somewhat shiny-ness I thought it would be easier to see inside at night with a flashlight. I also considered a plastic reproduction of the original but it was roughly $35 plus shipping and wasn't really that secure and most I found you still had to modify like cutting a slot in it for the glove box lids bar to pass through, and I don't believe it was that large though I could be wrong since I haven't seen one in person. and the extra capacity plastic one I didn't really put a whole lot of consideration mostly cause the manufacturer of the ones I was finding was Omix-Ada and I am seriously getting tired of giving them "another shot" again and again just to continuously be disappointed and have to re-replace or modify cause its not right.

My glove box of choice is the .50 caliber ammo can. Its a pretty stout metal container so its fairly secure and the easiest way to get into would be pry at the factory locking glove box door. Which I may figure out something in the near future to make it better. ammo cans have been around forever so it kinda fits in with a old jeep, especially since my jeep is sporting a military look right now . and you can get a new ammo can pretty easily for whatever reason.

First I removed the ammo can lid by opening the can and smacking the lid sideways and off its hinges. held up the can to back of dash to mark and drill mounting holes. then I removed the can and drilled it for small drain holes in the back and I drilled 2 large holes to put in these really neat looking waterproof power sockets for cell charger, GPS or anything else. Then I scuffed and painted the ammo can on the inside only a Rustoleum Metallic Silver hoping the brighter color would be helpful in seeing inside in low light conditions and to keep the freshly drilled holes from rusting. I am leaving the outside of the can factory color with stencil facing downward so from underneath the dash it looks kinda cool.

    And some pictures

And I will try to get some pictures of it mounted when done. It probably wont be mounted until this weekend since I have been having constant 100+ weather all week long even now at 10:30 at night its like 95 degress

If you think that the .50 is too large, like I did, then go with a .30 caliber can. It's a near perfect fit.

Yes the .50 cal can is a little larger than the glove box where it bolts up but its close enough that I can live with it. I was told I should use a .50 cal can and it was perfect but I never even looked at a .30 can. oh well like I said at least for me, the .50 is close enough.

So far I am happy with how its coming out. I have no plans of ever putting in a radio or extra electronics in this jeep but I felt that a way to charge or power a cell phone or GPS was basically mandatory, you know just in case im hunting in the mountains or something and phone dies or gps dies and im lost or need assistance I will now have a way to charge and use those things. im thinking of adding a 3rd item in the box, a cigarette lighter even though I don't smoke it would be a decent and fairly reliable way to start a fire if necessary.

My .50 cal ammo box glove box is all done and I am quite pleased with it. After I had it all painted and installed and everything I realized that I had forgotten to create a slot for the glove box door arm to pass through. So I removed it used my pneumatic die grinder to cut a slit in the right spot. touched up with paint the bare metal, reinstalled it, and im loving it.

You could take some vacuum tubing and split it down the center and place around the edge of the door.
