I am looking for help on placement of the cage in my CJ5. I have tacked the spreader bars inline with the org. equipment rollbar, but they appear to be too far toward the center? Should I move the spreader bar more outward on the main hoop bend and add a gusset bar(s)? I am placing 2 spreader bars near the center. I placed the stock roll bar further back, only reason was because the cage kit I have was for a CJ7. Is there an advantage to having it closer to the seat? I plan to place a cross bar for the seatback and shoulder belt attachment. Any thoughts from your experiences? I would like to wrap this up in the next week or two. Thank you in advance for your input!

if when you sit in the driver/passenger seat and you hit your head or if you think you're gonna hit your head while driving/wheeling then move them out further, esp if you want to add more bars in the center of the cage, gussets always help! can never be too safe!!!

I'd move them as far out as possible. It keeps the hoops from catching on trees that you get too close to.

I agree with goob. I made that mistake, mine should be out farther. One of these days I'll cut them off and reposition them farther outboard.

Does any one have the plans or lay out for roll bars. I want to build them for my 48 Willys and 77 CJ-5.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

If you have a top / doors already, put them on a couple of times while building the cage. You can use this as a guide for clearances, etc. Also, gussets never hurt, they can only help!

i moved mine out as far as posible with the two curves matching. i don' know if you're going to have the same problem i did, bt i have different radii bends on the rear cage and the hoops. all in all it's right where i feel it should be... too far out and you start hitting your head when you jump in and out, or at least that's what happened when i mocked up everything.

Kind of a thread Hi-jack....but could provide useful.

How does everyone tie their cage into the frame? I just got a full cage and want to tie it into frame both front and rear? Anyone got pictures?

I plan to use poly body mount bushings in six locations. The hole in the Jeep body will be larger than the sleeved bushing in the body mount bushing so the Jeep body can flex or float on the bushing mount. The sleeve in the bushing will tie to the frame outriggers solidly through the cage floor mount plates via a 1/2" bolt. Six 1/2" bolts will be holding the cage to the Jeep frame. I am copying how the body on frame vehicles are built. Hope this makes sense.

I think I get what you are saying, do you have dual exhaust? If so how you going to tie in the front hoop?

And also, How about the rear part that sits on the rear fenderwell? I have seen CJ7 that have like a 2x4 pice of tube run along the bottom part of the fenderwell that has bars that run down and tie it into the frame. will this work on a 5???

Mine is mounted solidly in 6 places. In answer to how you tie it in with dual exhaust.

    Like this: [IMG]

As far as the tieing in at the rear fenderwell, I found it much safer and easier to run bars down to the center of the tub and tie in to the frame in the middle for the rear hoop. Like this:

I am running dual exhaust but I am using stock type V6 exhaust manifolds and running the exhaust inside the frame rails.

The rear of the roll cage will be tied into the frame by an upright behind the rear tire. Thanks to Chuck I have some new ideas for the middle part of the cage.

One thing to keep in mind when looking at my cage picture is that there is a rear seat there, you can see the mounts for it in the picture. The cage fits into a CJ2a that has been extended 20 inches. The goofy stuff on the back holds a trail rack, a "normal length" cage would have ended at the last hoop.
