Does anyone know of a center console on the market that will fit older cj5's?...preferably a locking metal one. My only concern is the stock rail seat brackets. I also wonder if there is one that will fit behind PTO controls?

I did both. First I did the ammo can, and second I did a tuffy console. You will have to make a bracket t ospace the box off the floor. The tuffy had to be pushed back a bit further than the ammo can.

Custom seat bracket I built for the '71, showing ammo can attached to some angle iron that was bolted to the seat bracket. The ammo can was covered in seat material gleaned from one of those too-big, cheap pressboard consoles that the glossy catalogs sell. The ammo can was way better than the pressboard unit, and fit better too.

I have a few pics I can post Jim, but since I no longer own the Jeep, pics are harder to come by ;)
The good news is that the owner, Don, is a member here so if you really need a pic, Don can probably provide it.
Here's what I have showing the console, and custom seat bracket in the glass tub.

Here's a pic showing the too-big pressboard unit I had installed initially, before I disassembled it and used the material to cover the ammo can. The padded top on this one fit the top of the ammo can perfectly (but didn't lock or latch)

Yea, the problem is that I have a '70 model with stock seat brackets, underseat toolbox, underseat gas tank and PTO shifter. However, the PTO shifter sits fairly close to the tranny shifter and angles forward. Even if I have to scoot it back further, will a small tuffy fit?

    I like that
I carry a Firearm in my cars at all times and most the time when I leave the vehicle I carry it on me.
But with the ammo can bolted and locked I can leave it in the jeep when I don't feel like carrying

I bought a Tuffy for my 71, not sure how wide but it was just way too big. Very nice product but ended up going the ammo can route.

I made mine out of .223 ammo box. Its a little small, but to me fits perfect, made out of metal, weather proof, easy to open and out of the way. I mounted a cup holder on the top, that is just the right height for holding cups. I just painted it black and bolted it to the floor. Does not get in the way of the PTO knobs. I am very happy with mine, can even put a pad lock on it if you wanted to.

Looks ideal for my needs. Where do you get .223 ammo boxes?
