I have a local company that restores carbs to factory or show quality. They want $ 280.00 to do mine. Not sure I want to tackle doing it myself since it needs to be right. Any thoughts in the cost vs me rebuilding it ?

For only about $30 you can try first. Can't make it look worse ca it?

Do you care about the appearance? The main thing they are giving you is the original new appearance. If you rebuild this carb, the oxidation in the metal will not come off. You can remove the dirt, but a 'show quality' restoration will restore the metal surface to its original bright appearance.

Check old posts, but I recall that it's important to get the proper kit. The only other issue will be wear - in old carburetors, the carb body will wear around the throttle pivot, and leak air. This can be fixed by putting bushings in the carb body or using an oversize throttle shaft. Most individuals cannot handle this repair. Otherwise, clean it, put the right kit in it, adjust it and run with it.

Whatever you do, keep the tag.

I would want to do as Greenshirt says first. Soak it in Berryman's, then rinse and blow out with compressed air and rebuild it. However, I see you're doing a frame-off restoration so you may want to pony up the money for the "show" finish. I'd still try it myself first though...

$280? I would search for NOS carbs on eBay etc. Might be less money.

Typically they include more parts than you need. This makes the kit cover more applications.

But there will be quite a few parts to change - everything made of paper and rubber, and a few replaceable metal parts.

As mentioned if your carb is just dirty and you want to go through and clean it up and make it run good then if you have the confidence by all means do it yourself. If you lack the confidence and besides that want it to look really good then paying them to do it should be worth the investment. :)

Might try Allstate carb. Just google them. They have some nos stock and also provide parts or rebuild. I have bought some parts and have had good luck with then.

I've got a post somewhere here where I went through mine and used an ultra sonic cleaner from Harbor Freight. It's not "showroom" but I have a better understanding of how my carb works plus added a new tool to the garage.

It will look real pretty when you get it back, but it won't stay that way long unless you're building a trailer queen.

Both of these are reasons I'm digging into each system with gusto. Fun factor is really high right now!

It is definitely better if you have an understanding, or develop an understanding of what makes them go. Years ago a friend of mine knew a guy who was a transmission mechanic. I watched him take my T-90 apart in my garage and then leave because he was supposed to come back a different day to work on it. I'm looking at all these parts hoping he does come back, which he did of course and finished the job.

Bottom line I'm thinking if he can do it then so can I. With good references and attention to detail a lot of these Jeep issues/repairs can be tackled by us regular guys! :):coffee:

In college I learned all about Ohm's Law (V=IR) and having worked on a '59 Chevy pickup in high school it all clicked. Fast forward 38 years with no vehicle work and too much beer in between I've forgotten so much that digging into this Jeep is bringing it all back.

    Tim

Thanks everyone, I'm going to give it a shot. I've rebuilt everything on this jeep. Seems silly now to send the carb out.

Work in a clean place with good light. The white tablecloth on the dining room table for instance, would be perfect. Your wife will understand... R)

Just don't hurry, and don't lose any small parts.

Parts stores have carb cleaner that you can buy and soak the carb in after you disassemble it. I personally wouldn't bead blast a carb.
