I'm tryin to put an aftermarket hei dist. In my 74 258. It has a skip I can't get out. The distributor is new. Since then I've replaced the plugs, and wires. Changed the coil and condenser. Had the distributor in and out many times checking things. I pulled the plug wires, (originals), one at a time and it seems #2 and #4 are dead, hence the new plug wires. I replaced those two plugs and traded the cap and rotor with another one I have. Nothing works, yet it runs great with the original points distributor.
Does anyone have any other ideas on what to check before I pull it all out and go back to the point system? Any help is appreciated.

Did you run a new, larger power feed wire to the distributor? HEI needs a fairly large power feed wire, around 12 gauge iirc.

I've the original wire from the donor vehicle of the distributor. It appears to be 12 awg, yes.

Did you buy a used HEI? I wonder, because the HEI spark plug wires are different from what you use with the points distributor. So you would have had to buy new wires, or new wires would have come with the HEI, if it were new.

The original wire to the distributor goes through the coil and then to the points. It has a resistance that is between the ignition switch and the coil. You don't need the resistance wire with a HEI module. Looking at the wiring diagram here, C-38 should be a resistance wire. http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/22-7-CJWiringDiagram.pdf The wire C-42 supplies full battery voltage from the starter solenoid only when the key is turned to start.

Ideally you would remove the resistance wire and replace it with plain copper wire. Or, you could use the coil wire to drive a relay that takes power from the battery side of the starter solenoid, or run a separate wire from the IGN terminal of the ignition switch.

This may not solve your problem, but it's the correct approach with the HEI module. No resistance wire.

I got it. To answer your question before I make my confession... The distributor is new and I did bypass the resister with the heavier guage wire straight from the ignition switch.
I'm a little embarrased to confess this but I had the 2 and 4 spark plug wires crossed. A newbie mistake, I know it's been a while but I have done this many a time. I'm not a newbie. But I guess stuff happens. I'm getting old. Thanks for taking the time to help an old guy out. I just had to step a way for a while.
    Thanks again.
