I would like a good respirator that is comfortable and has replaceable filters suitable for use under a sand blasting hood. Can someone recommend one they have had good luck with.
    Thanks in advance

3m is going to be the easiest to find most likely. And given the current conditions of the market trying to find filters and what not you may have a bit of a time.

The cheapest but still workable is going to be the 3M 5000 series half face piece respirators. THey run around 20 dollars. The get the job done but the parts used aren't quite as comfortable as the 7500 series respirators. The 7500 series uses a silicone face piece which is MUCH more comfortable for long term wear vs the rubber facepiece on the 5000 series. Down side is cost but really it's only 40ish to 50 dollars for the 7000 series and IMO well worth the extra cost for comfort. Either way you go replacement parts such as inhalation/exhalation valves and harnesses are pretty cheap and easy to find.

Be careful buying filters right now as there are many counterfeit filters being sold for obvious reasons. Make sure you get actual 3M filters. Dont' cheap out on your lungs.

Filters for what you are wanting to do aren't that expensive but may be difficult to find. I'd go with at least a 3M 2071 (white color) filter which is a "pancake" style filter that is P95 rated. If you want a little more through filtering you can step up to the 3M 2091 which is a Pancake style pink filter and is P100 rated. They make a 3M 2097 P100 filter which has a charcoal layer in it to filter out lower levels of organic vapors. For this job you shouldn't need any organic vapor protection.

If you are going to paint afterwards you may want to go ahead and pick up some 3M 6001 Organic vapor cartridges and some 5n11 or 5p71 pre filters. You'll need the 3M 501 retainers to use those prefilters on the vapor cartridges.

It looks like PK safety may actually have filters back in stock to some extent and have the 2071 and 2091 in stock. Prices are cheap so make sure you pick up a few sets if they will let you.

Thank you very much, that is the info I was hoping to get. I had no idea what respirator or filters I needed for sand blasting. I will need paint filters later when I finish my frame sand blasting.
Are the organic vapor filter cartridges used for any type of paint? or are there special filters for oil base paints and a possibly a different one for urethane paints and so on? How about the very dangerous paints with isocyanates?
    Thanks again Jim

Well my first option would be to not paint with isocyanates. But if I absolutely had to I wouldn't be using an "air purifying respirator" (cartridge filter mask) for it. I would be using a supplied air respirator (full mask with an external air supply basically). Once you smell isocyanates you're already overexposed, and many times you won't even smell them when being exposed. Each exposure to them results in worse and worse symptoms. I wouldn't mess with this stuff unless I had a facility specially setup to handle it. It's super nasty.

The 6001 will be good to go for the majority of auto painting except maybe some Urethane coatings. I'd have to do a bit more research in that area. The 60926 filter is the best one they have. It's P100 rated and rated for the widest range of Organic vapors and all kinds of different gasses but is their most expensive filter. Also hardest to breathe through due to all the things it filters against, it's basically the Mac Daddy of their cartridge filter line but if you're going into an unknown environment probably the best one to have on your mask.

3M has really good info out there and if all else fails call them they have a really good customer service line that can help you navigate their documentation.

I rigged a clean air supply into my blasting hood. Also prevents the window from fogging.

Sounds like good advice, I think that painting my jeep would be best left to a pro. I will paint the frame and maybe also the primer on the body my self then hire someone to do the actual painting.
Maybe I should just bring it to Texas and hire you all to paint it:bananatool:
    Thanks, Jim

Yes I did read your post on that build. I am considering that my self. I did try a hood some guys had that used an external air respirator pump. Really made life under the hood great, no fogging and was much cooler.

I did some work for a friend at a pharmaceutical factory, if fact called Gilead. I had to run an air line into a sterile room that had a deadly gas component. No one was allowed in the room during production. Even though the gas was completely disconnected and off, I still had to wear a special mask fitted to my face. I had to shave my face at the protective gear supplier. Once fitted they used a tube of some foul smelling smoke and tested the seal. Then I had to take the mask off just to make sure I could smell it. I got a certificate for the job, which ended up take 30 minutes. Not including time it took to clean all my tools with alcohol, put on a hazmat suit, and put the mask on...

If you are going to run a respirator "for real" then make sure you are clean shaven. Over the years I have been fitted and re-fitted for respirators for various jobs but without proper fit and seal the respirator is not doing its job. Since this is for fine particulates and not noxious gases you will be okay with a "good" fit but keep this in mind.

The 3M 6200 series fits me well; I think I use a medium. There are actually different sizes of these so the brand/series number doesn't tell you the whole story.

Been looking at the Hobby Air II system. Seems like a lot to spend, but your lungs are worth it.
I paint enough I think it would work out well over a period of time.

    Hobbyair 2

What fresh air supplied respirators are you guys using.

Do I need a half mask, or a full mask.

I don't have a fresh air supplied respirator but that Hobbyair 2 looks tempting. I just can't justify the cost myself with what little painting I do. If you were closer we could go in together and share the cost and both use it. All we would need extra would be a face mask for each of us.

I've been looking at that Hobby Air II for a long time. I think this last paint job on the grand kids mountain bikes I built might be the last without one.
Seems like I hate shelling out the money for some tools and then say, "Why didn't I do this sooner?" Lots of expensive tools have turned into "one of my better decisions."
When Kevin Tetz said the respirators charcoal filters only last a little while after being exposed to air, I started leaning toward a fresh air supplied respirator.

I do wish I had more of my Jeep buddies closer, I might actually finish one of my projects.

All of my safety equipment came in today. Got a new 3M series 7500 mask and filters. IMG_1311.JPG IMG_1312.JPG
Thanks to all of you for helping me with the correct decisions on what equipment I will need.

I've been using this Breathe-cool system for a long time. I've had to replace the hose cause I kept cutting it somehow. I have a half-mask, and a sandblasting hood/helmet, I could probably use a full face now as I'm wearing contacts most the time vs my tri-focals.

full face respirator - respiratory protection | Turbine Products

When I'm doing small stuff, generally gear up cause the products are really bad to breath. Not very many of us have a bonified paint booth capable of a pretty clean environment and only have to wear a "good" respirator.
But most of us have a make-shift paint booth~ In addition to my respiration systems, I have pretty good ventilation.

My brother here was assisting me from getting wrapped up in the air line, and the supplied air hose for breathing~ air is supplied from a clean source, in my shop, I have the "pump" in an air conditioned area.

Here my brother is using my blasting hood from the same company~ supplied air helps keep the visor clear from fog and just a cooler under the hood temperature. If one has tried blasting with a typical non vented blasting hood~ it's horrible; hot, foggy, etc.

Even when mixing paints, it's very bad for us and good ventilation is a must and a good respirator, and keep in mind, the filters don't last forever and can get a little pricey. Remember, if you smell it, you're doing no good for your health. ;)

I think you'll be much happier in that 7500 than the 6000 series masks. I wore a 6000 series for nearly a month every day at work for 24 hour shifts and when I finally switched to the 7500 it was like wearing a cloud in comparison.

I did try out my 7500 mask today. did a little sand blasting job this after noon for about 2 hours. I have to say the 3m mask worked very well and was comfortable the whole time. The fit and especially the seal around my face was excellent. I had ordered the medium size mask. Thanks for recommending them and PK safety equipment co too.

I never spray anything with out the air supplied mask. most of the guys i started out working with are dead from overexposure to isocyanates. My mask is a surviveair that i got thirty years ago. i actually traded a paint job for the pump and mask. good airflow and a Tyvek suit help keep the bad stuff out.

I am thinking that I may limit my painting to just the frame and small parts with oil based paint and maybe some primer on the under side of the tub. probably will let my friend who has a body shop paint the actual jeep tub. I am not going to risk painting with any thing dangerous. I am thinking my new mask with the with the organic filters should be sufficient. any opinions?
