IMG_4625.JPG IMG_4626.JPG Recently bought a 74 cj5 and it had a key lock on the front grill left side. I thought it was a little funny, didn't really quite know what it was. Now that I've broken it apart there are wires attached to the back of the lock. Does anyone know what this is for and why you would have it? The wires were cut in lead to nothing now.

That was my thought. Maybe some kind of anti theft or something

It's not factory, or even "official" aftermarket. With the leads cut, we can only guess. If it were an anti-theft device, I'd expect it to be better hidden.

I'm guessing it was to power up a winch.

Yeah but it would be all four-letter words.

I vote for winch security. Or a hood alarm.

There's no telling. May have been used to start a generator or welder . Hard to tell.

Old school alarms were turned on and off with a key switch.

I'm guessing that was used to activate a security alarm system, or maybe just an under-hood alarm. Look around for a plunger switch that would activate when the hood opens.
    Definately not stock.

I am guessing that it was there to cover up a bullet hole from a jealous boyfriend of YOUR new girlfriend back in the day because only cool guys drive Jeeps!

Uncles 66 convertible Vette had that to turn on and off his "security" system.

Yea. I'd say alarm system. One of my sister's boyfriends, way back, had one of those fancy painted up street vans when they were the rage. I remember the keyed alarm system on it.

I was just a kid. Gonna say very late 70's or very early 80s.
