Hello from southern Oregon, I. Have a question regarding my 1954 M38A1 Jeep. My jeep is missing its bumper and and was wondering can a CJ5 bumper mount on a M38A1 or do I use the M38A1 bumper and do I also need to purchase frame/bumper braces or mounts? I appreciate any input here and is as always thank you.

The military bumper is shorter, and less likely to catch in manuevering around tight places.

I think they could swap, but I can check my jeeps for you in a day or two. I have both types.

I made mine... Super easy. The hardest part was drilling through the new steel until I broke down and bought a proper bit.

I believe they're a bit different in the mounting holes but can be made to fit. A former member here had a CJ5 with a military frame on it from the factory and a civvy bumper adapted to fit it. The original bumper was pretty dinged up & when he ordered a new civvy bumper to replace the original things weren't quite fitting.
