I decided to start trying to find where the brake fluid is leaking in the 3A today. It looks like a leaky wheel cylinder (big surprise :) ), so I pulled the tire off to get at the brake drum. I was surprised by a few things that I saw. First was the big chunk of break drum missing

Iwas expecting to see the same set up as my ECJ's, but these have the brake drum mounted behind the axle flange...Is this normal? If so I assume they pull off the same way as an ECJ5? Or is this some whacked-out PO mod?

interesting arrangement, I've heard of folks doing that, never seen one.
PO probably cut the drum away from the hub (factory) and then realized he couldn't swage it back together; got longer studs and reinstalled it the way you see it. The only off set difference would be the thickness of the wheel hub.
The hub will have to be pulled off the same way as you mentioned; be careful, who knows what might fall off when that hub comes loose

Jim, drum behind the flange is normal on earlier CJs, maybe a Model 41 axle thing.

These drums had a slot that you could insert a feeler guage into to check the drum/shoe clearence, maybe thats what your "missing" piece is for-

Hope you got a decent hub puller, you're gonna need it :(.

That style of brake is the early "Lockheed" brake. Later ones have the drum on the outside similar to Bendix brakes. You'll find that style real common on Willys Wagons and Pickups. As already said, yer gonna need a hub puller. Nickmil.

I've seen that arrangement on other Jeep models, but not CJs.
My D41 in my own 2A wasn't that way.
Interesting to learn new things just the same

Can't lay claim to ever having seen one myself, I'm going by Doc. Vern's info on his 2A's brakes, he goes (went  ) into a bit of detail on'em.

On the early 3A's and 2's I have seen them more that way than having the drum on the outside. I didn't have the drum on the outside of the 3 I have until I swapped them to 11" setups.

Have puller - well used. Use a points file on the key and keyway a little at a time and eventually they fit like butter - don't want to think of how many times I pulled mine over the years

I glad to hear this might be normal. Thanks for the link Howard, I'll be needing a puller :) So assuming I get them off, do they just go back on by tightening the nut?

    Thanks,

    Jim

Nut on Washer with Keyway in place... Critical to get it right, pay close attention when you take them off.

What Warloch said. Plus, install the hub first then slide the key in the slot. If you don't there is a good chance the key will slide back in the keyway and when you tighten the nut down the key ramps up in the back and breaks the hub. Nickmil.

Ya - when you've done it so many times, you forget to tell the rookie some steps

Yeah, I'm guilty of that too. Good to have that kind of knowledge though, isn't it?:) Nickmil
