Finally...ready to camp! Trailer all cleaned up, bike rack all painted and installed, also made up some of the PVC tarp supports (not my idea, came from the Bantam Trailer list).

Still plan to have a custom black vinyl tarp made, but with some rain in the forecast we'll be able to keep the inside of the trailer dry. There's about 2" of clearance between the tarp and bike rack.

How is the wieght issue that you were concerned about some time ago? Have you tested it with the bikes mounted and the trailer loaded? Just curious?

The first test will be on the way to the campground today...R)

Just haven't had time. It's actually not the fully loaded state I'm concerned with - it's having the bikes on and nothing in the trailer (all weight up high).

I'm planning on adding shocks yet as well.

Comfy looking bikes, albeit a bit heavy . . . 'course, I'm coming from a heavy racing background, both road & mountain bikes. Pic of me doing the San Juan Hut System, from Telluride to Moab in 2003, on my favorite mountain bike, the Cannondale Raven (I'm the suffering fool on the right). You just can't beat full suspension bikes.

Yeah...we'd be waaaay at the other end of the biking spectrum...;) Weight just isn't an issue for what we're planning do (family rides, campgrounds, around the neighboorhood etc).

And based on the bikes I've owned in the past (remember the 70's era Schwinn Varsity?)...these aren't that bad.

Like I said in that thread...If we get into it more we'll buy something higher quality and lighterweight.

And just FWIW - I set my bike on a scale and it's 35 lbs. I wanted to see how that compares to better bikes (and because people keep commenting on weight issues with these bikes), but Giant, Mongoose and Schwinn didn't put their bike wieghts on their websites.

This wikipedia entry lists some weight ranges for mountain bikes and it looks like that's not unduly heavy based on the suspension it has.

For cruisers, that's not too bad . . . my Raven comes in at around 21 pounds, & my Cannondale Ironman comes in around 18 pounds . . . rule of thumb for bikes is the the cost is inversely related to the weight. The bikes the pro's ride (around 16 pounds) can cost as much as a good used car (carbon fiber or titanium).

Be sure to keep us updated on the camping adventures! I'm hoping to have a few to share when I get my 2A registered & licensed here in Florida, just about finished with the restoration.

Boyink, could the rack you have be used mounted on an incline? Like one was riding their bike over the back of their Jeep. I want to build a mount a rack like that but don't know if there are any racks out there that would support a bike like that.

    Not sure I follow...

The rack I used was orginally a roof top rack, I just removed the feet and bolted it to the support structure that I built. The rack would be able to mount at an angle, yes, but you'd be putting more pressure on the uprights - not sure how much weight they could stand.

If you have a reciever hitch there are tons of options for racks to go on the back of a Jeep.

BTW - we're just back from a family ride with my kids and my folks. Nice time - ate blackberries from the side of the path - one of those converted railis to trails things.

Definitely want to do more of that.

    Mike,

Can you give me a shopping list and the dimensions of the PVC supports?

I've wore out 3 blue tarps to the elements on my 416 sitting in the back yard and would like to use something like this to support my next tarp.

Looks pretty in-expensive and quite functional.

    Art,
There's a PDF CAD drawing on the CDN M101 trailer Yahoogroup in the "files" section. You have to sign up as a member to access it but it's free. It has measurements, and parts and pieces.

I'll post it here but the file states clearly that's not allowed.

The diagram is also in the files section of the Bantam Trailer list. I didn't put it there...not sure if it's kosher with the owner/creator.

FWIW I found the width measurement in that diagram (50" IIRC) to give 10" of arch to the bows -- too much in my case. I kept taking off 2" chunks until I had the arch I wanted. I think I ended up at 42" or 44".

I also haven't glued it together...I like how parts of it can swivel as I push one side or the other so don't plan to glue all the joints. I'll leave the little 3" upright pieces unglued.
