Looking for thoughts on BFG MT KM2 for my JK:

We bought the Jeep with Goodyear Wrangler SRA. At about 20k we came across a good deal on a set of Rubicon takeoff BFG MT. We only got 20k out of them. Did 2 front end alignments and numerous rebalance and rotate, could not get them to wear evenly. I have BFG MT on my '70 and they have worn and performed beyond expectation. I am speculating that, perhaps since the set I had on the JK was a Rubicon takeoff, something happened to them in the first 5k they were on someone else's jeep. We replaced the the BFG MT takeoffs with a set of new BFG AT. They are 285/70/17, slightly larger than stock. 40k miles later have worn evenly, ride smoothly on road, and outperform many modified jeeps off road. I think I can probably get another 5-10k out of them, and then it's time to replace.

I am putting a small lift and locker in the JK and would like to go with a 33" tire. I want to keep the stock rims. I did the math and figured out that a 305/75/17 tire should be about the size I'd like to run and should fit on the stock rim. Problem is, it doesn't appear to be offered in the BFG AT. They do, however, offer it in the KM2. Wondering how this would perform on road. I know the AT would be ideal for our mix of on and off road driving, but is the KM2 doable, or am I going to be asking for the uneven wear issues we had earlier with the MT? Another option would be to find a set of Sahara 18" takeoff wheels (which seem to be plentiful on CL) and get a set of 305/65/18 tires. Or, keep the current 1.5" lift and stay go with another set of 285/70/17. Any way I go, this is a pretty spendy purchase that I have to live with for 40k miles, so looking for your thoughts.

The KM2s are a lot softer rubber and will wear out faster than the AT. I don't have personal experience with them but I know people who use them on their DD.

Yes! I have the BFG MT KM2's on both my 70 CJ5 (31/10.50R15) and 97 Wrangler (33/10.50R15). Had the MT's on the 97 before and loved them (now using these on my trailer). IMO the KM2's are even better. Great grip, great ride, and great look! The ride feels closer to an all-terrain. Road noise is considerably less than the KM's. I commute to work daily on the highway, and drive up to 65 mph regularly. So far the 33's on the Wrangler have about 2000 miles, and don't show any weirdness. BFG did a great job with these!

UPS just dropped off my 35" KM2's today. They look badass. I've heard mixed reviews about them between jeep and truck guys. Truck guys say they wear fast, Jeep guys say they last pretty long.

Yes. I have 285/70/17 km2 on my 04 F150. They haven't wore very well, but jeep guys love them.
My wife's JK rubicon's km from the factory lasted 70,000. We put a new set on and 11,000 later they still look new.

I run 35x12.50 km2s which i had bought for my '97 sierra. Put about 6 or 7 thousands miles on them before I took them off and they still look brand new. They are now on my cj5 and tested them out last weekend and i will say that they are AWSOME!!! Mostly wheeling in hard pan and rocks which are covered over in dirt and it felt like i was wheelin on asphalt. Road noise is nothing compared to other MTs i have ran. Tires before were 33" super swamper LTBs which were also brand new and the traction difference between the two are uncomparable. The LTBs had better feel in the thick, clay type mud but the KM2s whoop them in every other catagory. Awsome tire in every way and i could not be any happier with them.

Also, I noticed you said something about tire ware and cupping (that weird shape the lugs get into after awhile). As with any softer tire, if you maintain your PSI and rotate with every oil change, you will not have any problems what so ever...long as your ball joints are good and its riding true but with a newer jeep such as yours, I dont think that is a problem.

The hotness on TJ and JK forums is the GY Duratrac. All the traction of an MT with the wear and smoothness of an AT. Has good siping too.

My next tire will be 33x10.50 BFG AT (they don't have this size in the Duratrac). I'm running MTs now, with 30K on them. I've got maybe 10 or 15 left in them.
They are loud on the highway, have high rolling resistance, and no siping. A great offroad tire for a dedicated toy, but not great for a DD.

I have KM 2's on my '04 Silverado 1/2 ton. They vibrate, are obviously out of round and have one that is cupping. They have been balanced and balance checked several times. The tire that is cupping continues to do so regardless of position on truck. They grip awesome off road but suck in ice and after a fresh rain. I'm going in for warranty to see what is said. They are wearing fairly rapidly as well. They do have a cool look. Probably would be ok on a light vehicle but the vibration issues make me wonder.
The truck alignment has been checked multiple times and is dead on and suspension/steering is in excellent shape as well.
Next set of tires will be something else as I'm really unhappy with these on a daily driver. Would be awesome on a slow speed or trail only vehicle.

Pretty much the same issues with the KM2s on my F150. I don't plan to buy another set. I wished they offered the KM's in other sizes besides just the stock rubicon size of 255/75/17.

For sure, the KM2s dont like heavy vehicles at all...which im sure is because of the new compound they are making them from. Maybe i got lucky on my set...after 6 or 7 months on my 1/2 GMC, they still looked brand new even with a couple mud runs and a snow trip under its belt. Also, as stated, the duratracks are getting great reviews from jeepers...maybe something to look into.

I believe I have run a set of Duratrac on a work truck once, and what I remember of them is that they had an extremely stiff sidewall. Not sure that is going to work for the Jeep. I think the JK weighs around 4,400, a little less without the doors which is typically how it sits until winter. I'm leaning toward the KM2 right now, hoping the truck guys' symptoms are weight based, not compound based.

I have almost 8k on my km2s thats on the jeep and you can see the pics in the trail section under lagrange OHV and see how they look. Just because its soft, dont mean you cant get good mileage out of them. two critical things to do and you will not have a problem. Check your PSI regularly (i check mine once a week but thats just me) and rotate them with every oil change. may seem like alot but i guarantee that by doing these two things will get you your moneys worth out of them tires. Off road, they have seemed unstoppable thus far in my 5300 lbs GMC and on my 3500ish lbs jeep. I even run a set of 305/70R16 km2s on the front of my dodge cummins and after 4700 miles, they are looking great (bought them used with about 75-80% tread left). Good luck on the purchase my friend.

By the way, I couldn't find any locally. Apparently they are on national backorder. But I was able to find them on discount tire.com for $973 (set of 4, 35x12.50r15), which was a better price than I was getting quoted around here anyways

I love em off road, but if I don't air em back up to max pressure on the pavement, they wobble real bad like Nickmil said...have balanced them twice--even thought my wheels were bent...but the tires are out of round and low pressure seems to make it worse. Aired up fully they are OK on the road.

After a bit of a back order, set of 5 KM2 finally arrived. Ordered 285/75r17. Actual measurement is 33.8" diameter as they sit in my garage. Hoping to get them mounted and balanced this week, waiting on a lift kit to arrive, will post up pics once installed.

I have a set of km2 's. I like them. Been running mine at 25 psi. They seem really smooth even at high speeds. A lot better then my old tires. I only bought them about a month ago, so I can't comment on wear.
