I can attest to parts availability problems for the dana 27. Used stuff is out there but GOOD used stuff is getting harder to find. Struggled a bit to find the right new axle shaft u joints as well. Should have been a simple part. With the help members here, we found some listed for a different application.

I've resisted the Dana 30 option for many years. I now realize the reality of the situation and, with the exception of an accurate restoration jeep, I'll use a 30 on any future project.

Yep, if it isn't a bolt correct restoration, it makes close to zero sense to rebuild a D25 or D27. Money MUCH better spent on a pretty much bolt-in D30-which can actually be built almost as strong as a D44.

Another thing that most don't realize concerning D25 vs D30 turn radius.
The D30 drum sets closer to the pivot point than on a D25 axle.
Meaning the D30 wheel is closer to the ball joints than a D25 wheel is to the knuckle bearings.

In other words the D25 tire has to make a wider swing than the D30 tire.
The shorter D30 swing difference actually helps to keep the tire diameter away from the frame.
In other words the knuckle does not move inward toward the frame as far as a D25 knuckle.
Then to top it off that shorter D30 swing distance makes it that much easier (less effort) to steer the tire.

Oh, I did not know that... Interesting. The drum sits on the equator of that big shiny sphere.

If Jeep would have pulled the trigger one year earlier with the Dana 30 and Saginaw steering, the 71 CJ5 would have been the best universal Jeep ever built.

    Yep-assuming it was a 225 version of the 71.

The cj 30 up front and flanged 44 in the rear is a very good choice, no need to go 44 up front, but its a good choice, but not the only one. I have a flanged offset 44 and CJ 30 in my 47 2a and very happy :watch:
