odd fire, even fire...what to do?
one has good low end torque, the other opened up to breathe better. one is great for 4x4in' and the other great for the street.
well, i like the smaller ports of the oddfire, it keeps the velocity of the intake charge alot higher. but the smaller valves wont allow it to breath very well. the large ports and valves from the even fire allow good power, but you have to wind it up higher to get it.
    hmmm...
ok, i have a solution. open the valves up on the odd fire. you can still have the faster intake charge, but more gas for power. now, i am not going crazy with this so it isnt going to destroy my low end, but will allow more fuel in and give it some street power.
i spoke with the machinist and he said it wouldnt be hard and would cost the same as a valve job (about $125 for both valves). since i have a set of even fire heads from an 81, i think the valves are the same size (maybe .005 longer) only larger in the cylinder.
ok, i might loose 5% low end, but will pick up like 20% in the mid rpm range.

comments? anyone do or seen this done? anyone know why it couldnt be done?

Why bother? My :v6: is plenty streetable. There's plenty of power there. On the street the Buicks and Pontiacs and Olds were nice because of the low end torque. Didn't need a lot of high end to drive on the street and make it nice.

Guess I just don't see what you're after here. Do as you wish as always, it's your Jeep. ;) JMHO, YMMV

Ditto to what Sparky said, you're wastin your time in my opinion. The stock Dauntless will easily beat half the crap on the street, not to mention torque its way up the steepest highways effortlessly. Now I ported and polished my heads but If I would have had to pay someone to do it, I would have left it alone. An 81" Jeep is not a street rod and never will be, if you get to much highend hp, you'll only get hurt from trying to use it.
Like Sparky said its your Jeep do what you want, but I have to ask have you driven your Jeep with a stock Dauntless in it, mine under full throttle on the street will get squirrly.

I run a 231 EF and have no issues on road or off. The only thing is sometimes I wish I had the heavier flywheel in the real rough rocky stuff, but the lighter flywheel is much nicer in sand and mud. One thing to think of though is if the ports won't support the extra flow then you are wasting the money putting bigger valves in. The 225 is pretty darn good as is with some ignition upgrades, upgrade to a 2 barrel carb, and a good mild RV style cam. Nickmil.

I'd just clean the ports up some.
Gasket match the intake and exhaust and polish the exhaust ports.
Think you would be shocked what a little work in the heads does.

well, heres the thing. when my dad built it, he couldnt find an older carb to fit the bolt pattern so he switched to an even fire intake. i know there were misalignments in the runners and i know that will cause a problem. the 2 bbl was a newer style that wasnt tuned correctly and dumped gas down the neck. so, the power it had wasnt real great when i wanted to pass people or on the street in general.
i have alot of tuned upgrades in the motor now so i know i will have more power and better streetability, i just dont know how much.

this jeep was going to be a rock climber, but if i know me and going by what i did before, i crawled in it and didnt get out. so i will need it mostly for street (and since i might be moving to florida, i wont have much 4x4in to do).
i just dont know how much of a hinderence that old carb/intake was.
and now with the 9.6:1, comp 260h, offy dual port intake, rhodes lifters and holley 470 truck avenger, i think itll be good, but i just want to get the best power (without going crazy) i can due to past experienes with this engine. i dont actually know how a stock 225 ran, all i have seen is this engine.
