I once flat towed a 69 Charger packed to the ceiling with people and household goods with a Big Buick tuna boat something. From Lapine Oregon up over Mt Hood to South Portland in the winter at night on snow (no chains) the car I was towing with had the girl friend her 2 kids and her parents in it. The Charger had the brother of the girl friend his wife or girl friend and at least one little kid. The trip started after dark and finished as the sun came up 12 hours later. I think I lost 10 lbs. The things you do when your young and stupid for some girl you now can't remember her name!

I'm looking for an FSM and have found a couple. One has a blue cover with 372 pages. It covers 53-60. Is this what people use?

I think they have gotten some from places like Walck's 4WD. Is the one you're looking at what you tried to post a picture of?

Car trailer with brakes, That's a lot of road. 1/2 ton truck should be fine. Heck buy a trailer out there pull it home and sell it.....but you wont because it so dang handy, and then you'll have trailer! win win! I've paid for mine a 100 times over.

I agree with windyhill. Once you have a trailer you then realize how handy it is to have. It's like having tools that you hardly ever use, but when you need it you sure are glad you have it. :)

7 years ago I bought a 4x8 trailer at HF for $200 and have been real glad I had it. They come in very handy. I have decided to look for a 16' tandem axel with brakes here in Orlando. I expect to haul the CJ and all kinds of other stuff here and when we get back to Colo in 2 yrs I can haul the jeep to trails all over Colo and Utah

I had checked various possibilities to bring back my Jeep, travel was approx 450 miles.
The owner told me that it was possible to make such a travel, but I was not sure.
So I checked all possibilities :
    - paying a transport cy specialised in cars, delivering to garages,etc... that was possible, needed time to organise but correct price.
    - renting a truck able to carry a car : relatively expensive, but there are various sizes and in some case I needed à driving licence for big trucks... which I have, but I had to validate with a medical exam
    - renting a trailer : possible according to the weight of the vehicle.
    - borrowing a trailer : it is possible, too
    - paying someone with a trailer or truck to get it back for me : expensive
-towing under my car : it is not so easy, there are risks and if an accident happens, too late

In fact there is no perfect solution, there is a price to pay. I decided to bring it back driving it, followed by my son.
It was a terrible travel, never do it again. But it was OK.

The best solution it to pays somebody with the truck or trailer to bring it back! It is only once...
As soon as you start in CJ5 fashion, you have to pay.

Except, of course, if you let it rust in a garden, as we see on Craiglist. Or as do my neighbour, which decided to invest in the Peugeot 404 convertible.. there are 3 rusting in his garden...

Excellent choice! Plus you can haul the Jeep back to Colorado on it. :)

Yes we do. If not before you make your trip, definitely after you get back! We will need to discuss your Jeep for one thing. :)

Our Jeeps flat tow like there's nothing behind you. While flat towing a Jeep you don't know brings some concerns with it, if you drop the drive shafts you're down to tires, wheel bearings and some grease fittings. You'll probably put new tires on it in the near future so you might as do it sooner rather than later. Put them on in CO. That leaves the wheel bearings, some grease fittings and 15 minutes underneath the rig making sure bolts are tightened.

If you're pressed for time, can the Jeep be taken in before you get there? You could have re wheel bearings repacked and ready to go. With a little prep you can safely flat tow and save the money you were going to use at U-haul and pay for the set of tires.

Absolutely, I will need some tips and tricks from an "Old Master". PM me or whatever is appropriate. Still learning the etiquette.

While I've flat towed my Jeeps many times across the West, rear driveshfat removed, figured how to use stock running lights to use for towing. Everything in the Jeep is greased and lubed and I do stop and check for strange temps and run good tires on it. In several thousand miles of towing I've had the front tires cross up twice on the Jeep, no sharp turns. Fortunatly short time events and I could tell when it happened in my tow vehicle, even in a 12,000 lb vehicle.
If I had to do it again, I would buy a trailer and I would certainly find a use for it. We seem to find a way to use them

Could you buy a trailer, go get the Jeep and sell it when you get back, get your money back? I built a trailer when I retired, used a Dexter house trailer axel, narrowed. Them made the box the same size as a pick up, so I could put a pick up topper on it if I wanted to enclose it later. Everyone uses it, family, friends and neighbors, it has worked out well for everyone.
