My Uncle has had the jeep bug ever since I bought mine. He finally retired and on a wild hair picked up this 1991 YJ with 110K miles on it.
    Current specs....
    4.0L fuel injected
    AX15 5 speed
    3.5" Skyjacker lift
    3.07 gears
    32x11.5 tires
23.5" from the ground to the rocker panel.... 90's clown nerf bars make it look way lower than it is...

    The plan.....
    Install ARB in the front
D30 with 4.10 gears.... picked up a complete axle already geared to 4.10 for $100
    Install Trutrac in the rear
Ford 8.8 axle with 4.10.... same deal, picked up an axle already geared for $100
Deaver spring under plates on the rear
U bolt flip on the front
Slip yoke eliminator on transfer case
    Boomerang shackles
    Tie rod flip
    Winch
Install posi lock on front axle to eliminate vacuum disconnect
Build spare tire carrier that will attach to the very nice pro comp bumper already on the jeep.
Remove the 90's clown size nerf bars and install sliders.

We have been collecting parts on craigslist and planning this build for about a year. In the meanwhile he has been driving it and working out all the little bugs from P.O.'s skilled repairs.....:worry:
We are farming out the Arb and Tru trac installs to free up time. I don't have pics of the 8.8 rear axle. It is from a 2000 Ford explorer. 4.10 gears, disc brakes.
Here is where we are after 2 days.

Arb switches and Posi lock cable installed.

I was trolling craigslist when I saw an estate sale ad. I picked him up this winch and winch plate new in the box... plus a bikini top.... all for $240 :D

Nice! I like your build list. Takes care of all the known issues with that vintage, but leaves the 90's style. I think YJ's and TJ's are the new CJ's in 2020. Getting to be old enough that they're probably at the bottom of their values and will start appreciating as classics. 25-30 years old at this point but they still have a really good aftermarket choices.

I'm doing a slow build on my 1990 YJ while I daily drive it and a few things I did to improve comfort was weld up the driver side fold and tumble seat bracket so I'm not constantly rocking side to side, 3" shift lever extension and suspension seats which are thicker than stock, hence the extension.

    Spare tire carrier time!
Barbie has a super nice pro comp bumper on her. I wanted to retain that bumper and add the tire carrier to it. We ordered a pivot from ruff stuff.

Ruff stuff makes the highest quality stuff!

A little mock up. Tire is still on factory tailgate mount. We are using .188 wall 1-1/2" x 3" box tube for the main beam.

You should have seen him squirm when I took a hole saw to barbie's pretty powder coated back side....... I though he was going to hit me

One a pilot hole was established I was able to hole saw through the angled layer with the hole saw.

This is going to be awesome.

Trimmed the shaft and blended it into the bumper. You could use this pivot as a recovery point.....

    Starting on the main beam.......

Not to toot my own horn, there are better fabricators here than me...... but this is some inspiring fabrication that will sadly be missed because it got moved into quitters club......

More progress on barbies back end.
We fiddle farted around for a bit trying to get the height just perfect. Once satisfied I burned it together.
Very Little virgin steel was harmed in the following photos. Almost every piece of metal seen came from some dismantled mill equipment. We wire wheel the rust/ paint off and go.

Proof that I get a lucky weld in every now and again......

Time for the tire! We started off by cutting the old wheel lug plate off of his tailgate carrier. It was cut to length and welded to a piece of 2-1/2" box. Just for kicks I threw the gusset underneath it.

The gusset is overkill..... but it looks cool.

With the tire in position it was time to start adding the accessories. Because the highlift jack is the heaviest accessory....I like to mount it close to the pivot.
Mac was given one of these JK style highlift mounts for Christmas last year. Although it was wrong for a YJ, we decided to make it work.

After some cutting and grinding it fits like a glove. The bracket will bolt on to the tire carrier and should keep the jack rattle free. This is the base for the highlift mount. Because it jutts straight out the back. I wanted to give it a little skid ramp.

I really get tired of putting this tire up and down.....

The upright braces are strategically placed to mount the axe and shovel on.

One more shot of the gusset ..... Just because it will be covered by a tire from here on out........

Next up we will start working on the latch end......

It looks like it's too late, but one of the coolest tire carrier features I've ever seen (maybe worth it for version 2.0?) is instead of a fixed bolt pattern to hold the tire on, using a spare spindle/wheel bearing/hub assembly. If you break one on the trail, you can unbolt and switch. Maybe not worth it for a "barbie jeep" hahaha.

    Great fab work though!

Hypno-wheel! I’m planning that on my spare rack eventually. That, and the hinge is going to be a front 4x4 hub mounted vertically with a lockout dial to “lock” open when accessing the tailgate.

The YJ uses a unit bearing setup. Pretty easy to throw one under the seat. No locking hub required.
I have seen setups like that. Personally I feel like a spare spindle is one of those items that if broken while wheeling..... were probably worried about allot more damage than slapping another spindle on there and heading off..... same thing with a hub assembly. I can see keeping a set of wheel bearings, brass drift, hammer and a locking hub under the seat. I'd be surprised to loose an old school type wheel bearing setup if your rig was well maintained.... If you are racing its another story.
Furthermore, if you trashed an outer wheel end and you rob all the parts off your spare tire carrier.... including the spindle... where does your spare tire go?
    Just my opinion.

Exactly. I carry a spare spindle and hub w/ bearings in the parts box. I've lost a bearing (that may or may not have been properly maintained...:banghead:) that ate the hub and spindle. If the spare set was on the tire carrier, then something would have been left behind.

Pretty much how I feel. Besides your on the trail and your broke.... Who wants to disassemble one piece just to reassemble that greasy mess on another piece?
Throw pre packed wheel bearings in a Ziplock bag and go.

Sorry for chiming in late here. You said you want a Barbie Jeep?
    20200614_132825.jpg

Somebody in Northern Texas already has one. And while it is clear she has no interest in the Rubicon, she's clearly completed the "Barbie-Con" in its place.

    Continuing to the latch end......
I borrowed the toggle clamp off of my tire carrier to mock this up. We wanted plenty of room around the handle to operate it with heavy gloves on.

Yes. It is the 2k locking version.
I bought the 1k version a couple years ago when I built my tire carrier..... but I shelved it for the 2k model.

No, I believe that would be the Pepto Bismol Jeep.
