Are you still trying to verify your CJ as an R1? An easier way and possibly more conclusive would be to take a picture of the firewall just left of the heater box on the driver side.

If you've got the 12&13 pack leaf springs and oil pan skid plate it's probably an RI. Those were the biggest drivetrain differences. Most of the package was cosmetic. Here's a link to pics of mine. It will be at Windrock in March.

Hope this helps. I can take more pics when I get home in March.

I have the skid plate, the spring pack isn't so easy to verify b/c I'm sure I have an add a leaf. I'll recount when I can get down to the garage. My concern was with the frame boxing (still). I have yet to see the same boxing on any other early 5. Mine appears to be very much a factory job.

Oh Robert, welcome back. Long time no type :D. Hope things are going well for you.

Are yours boxed in front of the front crossmember?

Mine is boxed behind it but I think all of them are.

Older 5's aren't boxed at the horns I don't think. Mine is boxed at the rear spring hanger. I had a pic somewhere on the web. I'll look for it.

    Brad,

I've wondered a little about my CJ also. It has many of the features listed on the renegade page. I have the oil pan skid plate, boxed front horns, swing away spare tire carrier, roll bar, 4.88's with powerlock. Unfortunately I swapped out the springs when I got it, but they did have a lot of leafs in the packs. It also had two additional gauges when I got it, one was oil pressure I don't remember the other. Anyhow, for what it's worth, here's pictures of my boxed horns (could be aftermarket done by a previous owner, but the holes in the boxing are the same from side to side). I've also included pictures of my front rear hanger area as you've also asked about those in the past. I also stuck in a picture of my oil pan skid plate just for grins. How much of this is factory original, aftermarket, or renegade specific I really have no idea.

I'd be skeptical of declaring any Jeep a Ren I or Ren II just by the frame and/or skid plate. I'm too young to have first-hand knowledge of the '70s and '71s, but in 1972 every characteristic that was part of the Ren package was also available from the regular option list, except the paint, stripes and wheels. Omaha Orange was a fleet color, and was available by special order from at least '72 on, and I'd assume in the 50s, 60s and 70-71 too.

I agree Tim. There really is no way to be sure, unless you happen to be the original owner. The trim tag may be a good clue also, but alas mine is missing like most. If all the parts of the Renegade package were available as options in '70-'71, there really is no way to be sure. Even the stripes were available as replacement parts from the dealer.

That is it! I have the exact same boxing as well. I'll climb under and snap a pic later today. I can't see the skid plate all that well (old timers eyes). My skid plate is no doubt Dauntless green like some of my eng. block.

Tim, being built in '69 I doubt Kaiser was giving much thought to the '72 + years b/c they were (at the very least) concerned w/ the pending sell of the company to AMC. . . . IMHO.

Robert, I think this is a good start for a Ren I - Ren II regestry. Lemme get the lil one off for a nap and I'll go down and get some info/pics of my '5'

Is that boxing above the front rear hanger on all '70 CJ's, or something more unique? How about the front frame horns, is that boxing factory or aftermarket? They really don't look home made to me, but maybe aftermarket parts installed by the owner?

Fresh off the press. This is the first time I've seen another JEEP that had the boxing at the [front] rear spring hanger.

Don't rely on the spring leaf count or frame supports for identification. Variations of both are not exclusive of an R1. However, some features and parts were exclusive to the R1, a few being somewhat easy to duplicate by paint, adding a decal, etc. Brad - Again, if you want to post a picture of your firewall we can probably nail down your rig as a likely candidate for an R1.

beeser, what area of the FW? I don't have a trim tag left and most of what 'was' isn't. I'll get a pic and post here.

I have set up an album on oxcreek for this R1/R2 project. If you have pics that you'd like to share, hit my email at brad@oxcreek.com or find me here.

I'd like to have all suspected Rens' Ser # and build date. We can start and compile this info here and move on to a more formal document later as time allows.

Brad - Post a pic of the firewall left of the heater box (facing the firewall from the outside) and near the wiring grommet.
